NGC is the GT 1000 sport the ugliest Ducati ever built?
« on: July 31, 2019, 09:43:13 PM »
Ducati 2007 Sport Classic GT1000 for sale in Whitehorse. Asking price (cough) $8500.
Know that it hasn't been ridden hard. (I know the family). Pretty sure it was stored outside under a tarp in winter.
Realistic street value? $5k range?
Can't imagine it being a classic but who knows? I didn't think a 350 two stroke would be a classic either.
Fodder for a cafe at a realistic price, walk away, invest like it is a 900SS?

Funny, another thread is swooning all over the Beemer 9T line and Ducati built this line of bikes a dozen years ago.  They are nicely styled retro bikes and have kept their value.

So BMW and Ducati are selling retro bikes just as Guzzi was discontinuing the originals?

The rear wheel looks tiny. Out of proportion to the space available for the rear fender and shocks.
Like a 'super moto' back-end welded on to a sport frame. Could be my sensibility; but the thing lacks symmetry.

Asking prices look to be $9-12K. https://www.cycletrader.com/Ducati-Gt/motorcycles-for-sale?make=Ducati%7C2316082&model=GT%7C764948563. Recent sale (bringatrailer.com) at $7300. Your friend is asking what he wants and will probably get a bit less. $5K is a low-ball offer, but who knows, ask him and see what happens.

Here's mine.

Not a gt1000, but still a sport classic. Maybe the people who congregate around it whilst parked and who often take photos are doing so because it's just so darn ugly?

Ive never seen one before... but ya, that rear wheel looks like some one spliced on a late 70's motocross rear swingarm and shocks to it...   Strange..

The tank was way to big, the exhaust were ugly and didn’t look right, and the a$$ was too high in the air like a sport bike. I wanted to like these, but I saw these up close next to the real deal and there was no comparison. If you are going to do retro, you have to do it right.

The Ducati retro line was produced in a time when they’d run out of both new ideas and good stylists.  These bikes also had unresolved problems with plastic fuel tanks, some bikes having had several replaced under warranty.  However a lot of people liked them, driving the prices up in a bubble.  Now they’re coming down again.

I’d prefer either a real bevel Ducati (and have one) or a 1990s SS (likewise).  The latter are cheap to buy and a bargain.  Also you’re not riding a replica of another bike.

The Indiana is uglier.

+1.  I sold a '97 900SS/SP with flat slides and regret it.

I bought a 2007 Monster S2R1000, and I remember looking at the classics at the time.  For the same money, or a little more, the classics offered cheap, non-adjustable suspension, inferior calipers and tubed spoked wheels.  So I went with the Monster which was fine.  It's crazy now that the classics are going for over 10k up here...

Yes, the plastic tanks swelled, and Ducati warrantied them for a while.  But the replacements did the same.  If they are drained and dryed out, they go back to original shape (apparently).  Also, ethanol caused failed fuel lines in the tanks of these bikes.  My friends did just that.

I just thought I'd mention my experience on a Ducati forum where I was chastised about talking about my Guzzis (and Suzuki) there.  There are about 6 regulars on the forum and I suppose they needed to minimize all the chatter.   :whip2:

I think the GT 1000 is one of the best-looking Ducatis ever. Apparently, so, too, do many others. Look at the prices for them!

Granted, not the BEST looking Ducati (916 and 1098 look better), but not the worst. I would love to have one.

and as others have said -
look at the Diavel, the Streedfighter, the original Multistrada and the Panigale as examples of recent ugly bikes

If you think the GT1000 is the ugliest ever you've obviously not seen the Indiana.

Indiana gets my vote for ugliest.  I never really minded the GT1000's, and the other sport classics.  They kind of fall in the middle of the road for me.  I could live with one if I could get into it cheaply.  That hasn't happened, and I doubt it will, as they really seem to be able to hold their value.

Until recent years, Indiana held  that award.

Now, though, there are several in the current lineup that beat even the lowly Indiana.

While the bingo crowd was discussing the looks of the Ducati Sportclassic,  I was enjoying my brilliant Ducati GT1000 on the backroads around Mt Tamalpais and not worrying much about its looks.  Far superior bike than any of the bevels I have owned   Lets face it , you might not like the looks of this bike or that bike, but in the end when you are riding it the way it feels, performs way outdoes its looks ( GS riders already know that or perhaps should think about it) . It so happens that the Italians to a great degree  have set a pretty high benchmark on stylish motorbikes for a long time and not all of said bikes are apogees of their design capabilities. As per the saying : there is no accounting for taste. The rest is well... fuggedabout it. Perhaps some folks should spend more time riding and less time on the computer

I think they are nice looking. The problem I have with the sport classics is the shape of the back of the gas tank. It really digs into your thighs.

A) thanks for pointing out the Indiana. I hadn't heard of that. It's not something I'd necessarily be interested in, but, you know what? Someone made one of them pretty damn cool looking

B) before the Paul smart, my first Ducati was a diavel. It was crazy fast (0-60 in 2.6 seconds?!?) and comfortable and refined and sounded terrific and...as much as it should, it didn't really do it for me. While I'm of the opinion that it's a far cry from Ducati's most ugly bike (Indiana...I'm still looking at you), I can see how people may not like the styling.

C) fugly is a word that shouldn't be used in any context, ever, under any circumstances. Just say ugly.

I wouldn't question the capability of the model nor the quality of the machine advertised. I'm sure this is a completely stock example with barely any use.  The ocean of space (in the photo) between the rear wheel and the seat superstructure caught my eye. Aesthetics.

It hurts to see a classic bike being hacked apart to create a 'custom/bobber/cafe' yet a great platform is the best place to begin a project. Consider the words classic, vintage, and old. Where does the GT land on that continuum.
