1400 GPS
« on: August 04, 2019, 10:09:01 AM »
I have a 2014 1400 Touring and have finally decided to put a USB port on the handle bars for a GPS or my phone. I was fretting on how to get a feed from the battery area to the handle bar area when I thought I might tap into something else up front.
When I was looking I noticed the fog light wiring and decided to look that up on a wiring diagram. Low and behold there is a plug #12 that is shown to be for a GPS! Tried to locate it under the left and right covers near the fork but can't find it. Googled it and found that one guy had found his under the left cover and another guy found it "coiled up under the gas tank!" Very convenient!
Not sure if this was something offered in later years or if Giuseppe forgot to put it on my bike. Has anyone here installed a USB port on a 2014 1400 and located this #12 plug or did you feed from something else.
Looks like a three man job to take the gas tank off without scratching the crap out of something while disconnecting lots of hoses, gas lines, wiring etc. Not happening!

                         Thanks in advance.

Just a thought. I use my port on my 1400 for that exact purpose. It’s not a hard wire fix but it does work well for me.

You might have to lift the tank and pull it back a little bit but it is there.  BMW sells an adapter that plugs directly into the Guzzi plug that you can then attach your USB port wiring to.  I used it to power my gps.  I don’t remember the part number I ordered I can try to find it if your interested.

I found it.

Thanks for the info but I have a major problem now. Washed the bike and went for a 60 mile ride. Was following and old Volvo and started smelling something hot about 10 miles from home when we would come to a stop. Got home to check things out and had a little smoke coming from under the seat.
30 amp fuse was totally melted along with the fuse block. Checked the front where I was looking for the GPS connection and no sign of a problem.
The fuse should have blown not melted. Not sure if fuse block got some water in it or what. Had the bike parked at an angle at my son's house at the half way point, so maybe it filled with water then? Weird and I'm sure costly to get fixed.
Also not sure why they don't individually fuse more items. Kind of hard to trouble shoot and protect wiring when you just put in one large fuse to protect a lot of smaller loads.
And while I was looking in the manual to find out what the fuse protects, I found where it shows the GPS plug under the gas tank!

Man that sucks.  I don’t know how you could get that much water under the seat.  I better check mine.

No good and a lot of bad can come from washing a motorcycle.  Better to use a cleaning cloth and aerosol spray.

Not sure if water was the issue for sure. I've been a residential electrician for 40 years ( thankfully not working on automotive wiring ! ) and a bad or loose connection at the fuse or circuit breaker causes heat that could melt the fuse and block not an overload that would trip or blow the fuse.
That being said and not being experienced in this type of wiring I think I'll let Jim Hamlin and crew check this out.

Yes if the plastic of the fuse or the holder melted its because of a loose connection not an overload, the VII spine frames were notorious for melting their 30 Amp fuse.

I have a 2014 Touring and I ordered the Moto Guzzi GPS mount when I bought the bike. I learned that the mount  is made to fit a Tomtom Rider and the plug (which I was able to fish out with a forceps) fit the Tomtom mounting base. The Tomtom gets mixed reviews, but I like mine and it was basically plug-n-play.

Its on the right side , coiled back on itself and zip tied to an another harness, under the tank. The BMW plug works perfect. You only use #1 and #2 wire. Ignore the 3rd one.BMW uses it for their Nav5 and factory aux lights. Use solder and heat shrink to connect the plug to the gps harness. The BMW plug has about ten inches of wire on it.

Hi Bud,

Sorry to hear about the melting wire problem, I hope/trust that you will get that sorted out.

I do have info on the MG GPS mount.  As stated by MMC, the mount is made for a TomTom.  I made it fit a Garman unit ('cus I happened to have one), with zip ties and a plastic wedge...see pics.  A little Dremel work was required but it works fine.

Be well,
DougG

The four mounting holes are standard. I have the Guzzi mount with a RAM ball and short arm. Works fine.

On my bikes, I replace the factory plug with an SAE connector. Then I can connect whatever I want to that, including the plug I cut off since I would leave enough wire on it to reuse if necessary.
