(NGC) - Sometimes kids help to keep things in perspective
« on: August 04, 2019, 10:45:53 PM »
Just thinking back this evening when I was still working. My job involved quite a bit of driving as between going to and from my office and five different school districts I averaged over 100 miles a day. I drove Honda Accords until the wheels pretty much fell off.
Working with students with disabilities many came from poor families. A student that I was giving a ride to a work-study business in my Accord that was 15 years old and had over 250,000 miles commented on what a nice car I had. Humbled me.

Good story John, Yes we are spoiled, and tend to take the blessings we have for granted. That Accord was probably a luxury car compared to what his family had, if any. Thanks for posting that, and thank you for helping kids with disabilities. I am absolutely sure your work, made a difference in many kids lives.

Good story! Living in the US we are accustomed to many things that are not available in the rest of the world. I dont think our youngsters are aware that a lot things we take for granted because we have always had them here are not the norm for so many across the globe.

Even at 15 years old and over 250,000 miles the Honda probably still looked/ran great.
Just think they made a mistake by discontinuing the Element.
But I'm thinking the student was thinking how nice it was of you to be helping him/her. :thumb:

I used to stack miles too. 12 - 1500 a week. My 2 Accords always looked great when sold or given away. So did a string of Fords preceding them. Gave my last Accord to my daughter in law w/346K; then to her daughter at 407/K. (Same clutch, no engine work). She passed it on to?
I needed more 'capacity' and bought an Acura CLS 3.2 coupe. Gave it to my mechanic w/545454.5 miles. (I do most anything to make a Grosjean number).
Never owned an automatic 'til my current Ford Flex. I've had a few Honda bikes. Except for fewer wheels there are some similarities. I've donated other cars to the Salvation Army. We've had a thing going on for years. :)  R3~

Good story, John. Dorcia works with "special" kids, too. Some of them, because of nature or nurture.. won't enjoy the things we consider normal. Because of people like her and you.. some will.  :thumb:

I don't deserve any pats on the back. Just trying to be a human being hoping to leave a little positivness on this earth. Besides it was a neat job in most respects and I got two months off in the summer.

I have an opposite story to show how truly spoiled we are.

I volunteered with the Boy Scouts when my boys were involved.  I had an extend cab truck and would carry gear and boys to campouts.  Never had a boy in the truck who couldn't figure out how to open the windows or unlock the doors.  They had never seen crank windows and manual locks and this was a MY2000 truck.
