I also tighten by hand and use the venerable hose clamp around the filter base ploy for insurance.

After I moved to GA I got a call from an old customer bitching about how tight the filter was, HA. No hose clamp needed.

I used to do my "in the sump" filters just slightly more than hand tight and and then a hose clamp.

Recently I did my first "external" UFI filter with a good filter cap wrench,  and I was shocked and surprised how tight I had to do the filter to stop the leaking.

From now on I will be doing all filters internal/external very tight,,,even with hose clamps,,, I think there are probably some hand tightened internal filters out there losing oil pressure, mine included   fwiw ymmv

This is the first I've heard of hand tightening the filter. Why would it be any different than automotive applications where it seats, then another 3/4 turn?

Just did this today. Filter needed a bit of force to come off, did the new one the same. Seated and then turned until tight. Hose clamp as per Manfred H.

Does Guzzi publish a torque spec for tightening oil filters?  I think I recall using it.
EDIT:  Here's what I found looking thru torque specs for my 1200 Sport:
Oil Filter:  15nm or 11.06 lbf - ft
I believe that's what I've used for the past 14 filter changes over the past 68,000 miles and 9 years of ownership.
Seems to work.

Count me in, must be drop the sump day. Got tired of worrying about the internal filter coming loose( and it was)  . So I finally got around to installing the Harpers outsider to the LMIII. A very well made piece . Came complete with gaskets, new bolts of the correct length and even a new filter.  I will still probably drop the sump every few seasons to clean the screen and gunk out but will enjoy being able to keep an eye on the now external filter and of course make oil changes easier.  Very nice kit Curtis, thank's.

^^^^ Just a couple of "for instances.."
Once people started using outsiders, and could see what was happening.. the fault lies with UFI gaskets. Not to mention leaks at the seams where it is crimped, and paint coming off from poor paint prep.
Just say no. There are plenty of other manufacturers.. <shrug>

How much of a turn from lightly seated does it take to get to 11 foot pounds? That doesn't seem achievable hand tightening.

Handtight is not good enough.
As mentioned before the filters have torque specs - the ones from UFI can be found on the filters cardboard box.

@ Phil ...your are right (just googled for UFI filter photos)  ... nevertheless I think using a torque wrench is better.

You can over tighten filters. Especially the ones with square section seals. Can squeeze the seal out of place. GUD had quite the issue with that 15 or so years ago

This oil filter thing drives me crazy...  What filter, how to tighten, to use a clamp or not...  OE filter, tighten to specs, still loose a motor...

So is there a downside to using the clamp? Any reason at all not to?

Haven't had one come loose...yet

On a somewhat related topic, I've recently started buying HiFlo oil filters partly because they are (German)  TUV approved. Do they really test EVERY filter before shipping it? Or do I have that cross-threaded?

Sure, the modern Guzzis with the filter up in a well in the oil pan. There's no way to get a hose clamp on them.. and.. that's when many found the UFI filters leaking. Guzzi even said use a Bosch 3330 at that time. (07)
Using a clamp negates the feature of the trap door in the oil pan, too, on engines so equipped.

It has been known for many years that the internal filter **might** be able to loosen up. There have been heated disagreements regarding the use of a hose clamp. It seems that folks are willing to debate the use of one over 2 dollars and an extra 30 seconds of work. I know of a couple people who experienced a catastrophic failure when a filter came loose. I also know for a fact that a couple of the ones I was aware of were loose knowing full well the competence of the owner. (I am certain it was properly installed in the first place.) I found one loose on my EV and I know it was tight when I installed it. I didn't have a failure thankfully, but I did the hose clamp from then on, and this was after numerous oil changes.

So, is there a downside? Unless you are worried about 2 bucks and 2 minutes, NO. Is your peace of mind worth that much?

Sounds good to me!!  After removing all the bolts, and dropping the pan, a few more seconds to add the clamp is easy..I beleve I have the UNI filter in there now..  That's the OE filter right??  I got it from the dealer. Ill just look at one of the aftermarket ones next time. Thanks

Yes the ufi is the OEM filter. Having said that I would still use a clamp.

So how tight should the hose clamp be?

What about if the hose clamp loosens up? Should we install 2 hose clamps, as a "belt and suspenders" thing? Also, do you install the hose camp near the base of the filter, or right in the middle?

I always tighten hand tight on every vehicle and always have to take off with a filter wrench. That tells me the filter tightens itself over time, right?

Just changed the oil in my wife's car. Last time, I was traveling for work a lot so she took it to Jiffy Lube. I am home this week, so I took care of it today.  The drain plug was so tight, I had to jack the car up high enough so I could get two hands on the wrench. Should have been a clue as to what was to come. I'm a pretty big guy, but I wrapped my paw around that can and it would not budge. Jacked up, two hands, still can't budge it. "Righty tighty, lefty loosey" playing in my head, I slipped my filter wrench over the back of the filter and promptly stripped the end of the can smooth. On to the strap wrench... The filter  crushed and collapsed in several places, but finally gave way and spun free. I guess at Jiffy Lube, "tight enough" means friction welded into place, never to be removed by humans.
