Coughing Cali 1100 carb model
« on: August 10, 2019, 06:32:02 PM »
Hi guys, I wonder if this may give anyone a clue as to how best to proceed.

I've got problems coughing and spitting, well not me my 95 carb model cali.

She used to just pop on the overrun, the throttle shut off with the engine braking, but now it's coughing and spluttering at low revs, like 50mph in 5th gear. Open it up and she doesn't cough but she does feel like she's labouring a bit more than usual. The carbs had a complete strip down and clean last year, including replacing the pump diaphrams, so I wouldn't have thought it'd be that, but I haven't had a good look at them yet. I'm just trying to establish which order to proceed with attempting to cure the problem.

I can't find any leak on the vacuum side anywhere, and the rubber boots between carb and inlet manifold seem good and have reasonable flex in them.

When I put a small amout of choke on things even up and she stops coughing and spluttering, but it feels and sounds like there's too much fuel there, you know, a bit choked up.

Does this issue sound like it might be caused by one of the choke plungers not seating properly?  There seems to be the correct amount of free play in the cables when closed, but I know the choke plunger/piston can get sticky and not seat correctly.

I'm pretty sure the carbs are balanced well, but I'll check that more thoroughly.

Any ideas Guzzi guys?

Thanks, Martin

I had the same problem with my v11 lemans so I took it to a shop.

Pulled the exhaust headers, cut off the crosspipe (it already had a Mistral X underneath) and had the Patches I made off the crosspipe welded into the holes by a great welder ($100).

A little better.

Then I took it to another shop (9 hrs of driving round trip).

He found the intake air leak and cured it.

I'm a shade bush mechanic that often needs help.

First thing I would do is check valve clearance. That's routine.
Then, you say you checked for leaks on the boots, by look and feel?
Try spraying hot start at idle on them.  If the bike runs smoother, you found the vacuum leak.
