Reculator/rectifier craziness
« on: August 10, 2019, 06:56:47 PM »
So I got the reincarnated T running sweetly and then fuses start blowing, so I started searching for a short circuit.

After the 2013 flood I installed the Enduralast voltage regulator/rectifier. It worked great. But now I've traced my electrical problem to an apparent short circuit inside the voltrect box. I found continuity between the green battery-post wire and the orange wire from the ignition switch -- that seems very wrong. I stripped the cover off the wires to make sure they hadn't gotten crushed together, and no, all the wires have good clean undamaged insulation.

The unit is long out of warranty and I'm glad to buy another, but first perhaps someone can tell me if this is a malfunction so I can stop trying to trace a short circuit elsewhere.

I just had to replace the R/R on my 96 1100 Sport that I bought from euromotoelectrics. It was the original Ducati R/R and they told me how to test it. If you have continuity between any of the wires, it's bad. If you have continuity between any of the wires and the case of the R/R, it's bad. That's what happened to mine.

Can you provide a link to the appropriate Enduralast product to save some time and going down the wrong track.
You will most likely need a new unit.

OK it must be this one
https://www.euromotoelectrics.com/kb_results.asp?ID=117
If its still installed on the bike there will be some sort of a circuit between orange and green because the orange wire feeds the Brown DF which is grounded by the rotor.
Disconnect just the Orange wire to make sure its not something else taking out the fuse.
Have you checked the alternator rotor they typically measure 3 -7 Ohms between DF and chassis, a short there would account for a large current on the Orange wire.
With the Brown wire pulled there should be no significant current on Orange

Again i'm guessing

The Bosch regulator and rectifier is missing of course.
I assume you are running a normal battery.

Is this the Enduralast permanent magnet system?
Good judgement comes from experience.
And experience. That comes from poor judgement.

Kiwi Roy has it right: it's the Enduralast system -- and based on his description of the DF connection, the reg/rect is probably entirely innocent. I took the system off the bike and the only continuity is brown-to-orange, as it should be.

So back to square one. I'm going to take all the wiring out and start over.  :embarrassed:

Nobody has mentioned this handy troubleshooting hint in this thread yet.  Make up a couple of clip leads to put a big light bulb (like a headlight) in place of the blown fuse.  That will keep you from blowing your fuse budget (pun intended) while seeking the short.  Keep wiggling and/or disconnecting things until the light goes out.
