How to remove tach drive from timing cover?

I need to remove the tach drive from my filthy timing  cover from my 77 lemans before I media blast it. It’s a 14mm bolt that doesn’t budge. Is it a case of, it will budge if I keep trying or is there a special way of removing it

Use a six-point socket to keep from rounding it off. It will eventually move, it just might take a breaker bar on the socket to do it.

breaker bar was def needed. it made a wonderful sound went it let loose.  that being said how, hard do I crank that a sucker down when I reinstall it?

Great answer...
When you put it back together use a dab of antiseize on the threads and just nip it up.
Want a torque? 10 inch lb should do it,  dont use the breaker bar to do it up

And don't forget the little washer thats on the bottom of the locating tab on the bottom of the tach-drive keeps it from rubbing on the inside of the case as it rotates if you don't have one it's might be that it fell out and you didn't hear it see it whatever or it's been apart before and a little washer has fallen into the very bottom of the front of the engine

I use a closed end wrench, hold the wrench onto the fitting, and load it so there is no slop. Then rap on the wrench with a hammer with the other hand.

You have one - between the gear and housing - there should be another at the tapered end. Might still be down in the transmission and hopefully hasn't dislodged already. I'd poke a "pencil magnet" down in the hole to see if you can capture it, then stick it to the gear with grease so it doesn't get loose during reassembly.

I edited your picture to show the existing thrust washer and where its mated pair should go.  Unless you have banged the cover around a bunch, it is likely just stuck into the bottom of the recess.  Reach in with a thin magnet.  The case is aluminum and should NOT react.  If you feel a little magnetic pull then the washer is sitting there.  You could just leave it if you are careful in the cleaning process and confirm it is still there before assembly.  Best you should extract it and reinstall at assembly.  If it has gone missing, DO NOT use a simple washer. This is actually a thrust bearing item and has a hardened surface.  Get a replacement from a junked motor or transmission.  I believe the exact same washer resides in the transmission's speedo drive.

Or start looking around on the floor.
