I wear an HJC half shell for putting around in my small town. For everything else, I wear a 3/4 LSI Spitfire. Clean, comfortable, and has a retro look I like with modern tech.

NC - in 1981, I was an assistant manager in a drug store making $200 per week.  I bought my first bike, a Kawasaki 250CSR (pretend cruiser).  I bought a Nava Helmet (remember those, I think they morphed into Nolan) for myself and my wife for a week's pay ($100 each).  I had done some reading but it simply seemed to make sense to me that if you came off, you had a better chance in a full face.  The Nava did have a large face area with much better vision than the Bells and other full faces of the time.  I have also found them to be quiet using ear plugs and of course there are advantages in rain and cold.  All of the above applies to me only, no judgments just my opinion.
Absolutely very good reasons Blu and the responses we are wanting to see from riders. Thanks!!

Full face... because when you have a face like mine, you dare not make it any uglier by sliding it along pavement. Also full face helmets for my wife and kids, not because they're ugly, but because they have faces worth protecting...

Also, at the MSF course, they showed us the slide of where the human head hits the pavement in a motorcycle accident...

The chin area takes an awful lot of impacts... so yeah, full face for me and mine.... thank you very much.

I've always worn full face, especially when going at higher speeds and longer distances, which is 90% of my riding. If I rode like a LOT of the Harley and Boutique guys (no judgement) into town to go to a restaurant or the weekly gathering, I might consider a 1/2, but normally I am out on the road, at speed, even when 'commuting' and have never wanted to risk it. Though the MGX screams "wear a half helmet'.... we will see....

All of the above?

I have a 3/4 with shield that I use it for around town/local trips.

I have a modular for traveling.

I have a full for winter.

That said, my new Nolan N100-5 modular will probably rid me of the 3/4 and the full.

I figure if I am going to wear one it might as well give me the best protection, therefore full face.  When I was young I wouldn't wear them because I hated having one on.  As I have aged I am now wearing one in spite of my dislike.

I felt similar in my first riding incarnation, but after five years helmet free I went to full helmet and never looked back.

They are so much better now than the buckets we grew up with.

And somebody said " Only wear as much helmet as your head is important " or words to that effect.

We wear Shoei-RF 1200 full face helmets with Sena SMH10 intercoms %100 of the time.  We're thinking of modular with the sun shield and possibly built in Bluetooth for the next pair of helmets.  I'm thinking a lighter color might be a wise choice also.  Our helmets are black and get toasty when it's sunny out.  I would like to talk my wife into a hi-viz color..
We don't listen to anything with the Bluetooth, but it's nice to be able to talk (warn) my better half of upcoming obstacles.

Old guy in a motorcycle shop said it like this, "I sell $5 helmets to people with $5 heads."

Since it's often warm down here I mostly wear a high quality half for casual riding on my Cali. 1100EV sidecar rig. I wear a full on any highway rides, due to blowing sand, bugs, noise, rain, etc. I wear a full always on my Duc. 851, as you just can't trust that beast.
I ride to work, ride to eat, ride to nowhere for nothing.

Neotech 2 modular... down for most riding, up when at a stop or around town.
I sometimes ride the Excelsior around town with a 1/2, but rarely at highway speeds.

I keep my roached Arai Quantum in my shop to remind me of what happens when you hit a deer and face plant at 60mph. It's why I'm still here.

Full face helmet always, and ear plugs.  At my MSF class the instructor said there is a saying:
"Open Face helmet, closed coffin".  I thought that was a bit harsh, but I want max protection.
Also, the instructor said that with a full face helmet always wear ear plugs.  The noise at speed with the full face is much higher than OSHA limits, louder than without the helmet!?  They have done studies that noise causes much fatigue.  And I did an "experiment" riding with and without ear plugs with my full face helmet.  It is LOUD without the ear plugs.  So I guess there is something to it.

This is the 3/4 I just ordered. I’ve only rode in 1/2 helmets for 40 years. This brand advertises the smallest non mushroom helmets available. They actually use two shell sizes. One for small and medium and a larger shell for large and X large sizes.

P.S. If you don't, Bell's Custom 500 helmet uses five different shell sizes!

Wow, I didn’t realize any helmet company made a shell size for every size! I expect the Bell would cost quite a bit more than this one, 89.00. It weighs in at 2# and has a fiberglass shell. The Carbon fiber series is 160.00 but only weighs 1/2 pounds less. Thanks for the info Moto👍

You're welcome. The regular Bell Custom 500's, in five shell sizes, go for $119.99. I don't know what they weigh. If the one you ordered fits your head really well I'd just keep it.  :thumb:

I used to wear a full face. I switched to a modular when I could no longer ride with out prescription glasses and found that putting them on with the full face was  a pain to do. I am on my third or fourth Nolan. They just fit me better than most other brands.
I still have a 3/4 that I used on short rides when I had an EV. Just switched to a Norge and have not tried the 3/4 with it.

Full face. Been a Shoei customer since the eighties.
... and now I wouldn't buy a helmet that wasn't pinlock ready.

Full only since the original Bell Star in the 70's.  When I hit a deer 5 years ago the helmet saved my face.  Saved for what I don't know, but at least I still have it.

A rough statistical analysis (this is Norman math, I get to make the rules), counting mixed preferences as half scores and with arbitrary rounding, comes out something like this:

2% half helmets

24% three quarter helmets

74% full face helmets

Modulars were either ignored or counted as full face helmets.

Complaints regarding statistical techniques may be forwarded in PM. A complaint processing fee will apply.
