automobile tires
« on: August 18, 2019, 04:10:24 PM »
Hi
Not trying to start anything, but I'm adding a sidecar rig to my 98 EV. I'm also on the verge of needing new tires. I have read a ton of articles on auto tires on standard bikes and get the whole point of not doing that. But sidecar rigs operate differently and am wondeirng if anyone has used auto tires on your bike with a sidecar attached. and if it happens to be an EV or California can you tell me what size tire you used on the rear?
Thanks
Michael

I ran an ST1100 and EZS rig for a few years. It had car tires all around. Perfect use for car tires. You do have to be careful though, and make sure the rim you are using will take a care tire of that diameter, as there are differences between car rims and motorcycle rims. My rig had car rims lfitted as part of the install of the sidecar

I have run a few auto tires on the rear of the bike when a sidecar was on it.  It is difficult to get the tire to set the bead on some bikes.  I have successfully done them on Suzukis with a 15 inch rear wheel.  I got more than 20,000 miles on the rear tire compared to 3,000 to 6,000 for motorcycle tires.  It had better rear wheel braking
power and got better miles per gallon too.  Steering was also better.  There is a slight discrepancy in the 15 inch rims that may make some tires impossible to get
 the bead on.

Ran a car tire on my Stelvio/DMC rig.  The only way to go if you can find the right size.
Never did find something for the front tire.  I was told to buy the cheapest tire I could find as that would have harder rubber and last longer.  Top brand front tires wore out in 3-4 thousand.
