You are not the only person with Catalina issues since it was introduced. My  own Macbook crashed completely after installing Catalina and I lost just about  everything including bookmarks, photos, videos and many files. Very little could be recovered. If your system has cloud  or another backup  that may help.  Good luck

The only issue I have had is that the microsoft office apps don't work anymore but I'll just use apples office apps no problems so far.

The really annoying part is I never upgrade software unless I think long and hard, this version can't have asked.

Several of my neighbors went through the Microsoft  Office problem no longer working and got most everything back working so the general consensus is to dump  M.O. before installing Catalina update . This is however hindsight being 20/20. On older Macs everything can and has gone caddywampus as in my case. I am writing this on another computer as the old Mac is being checked ( and possibly repaired). Hope that folks have backed up their machines regularly ( not something I did) or have cloud storage so they can recover theirs.....

.

Sure does seem that way as well. I kept getting the update message and put it off intentionally till I could figure out the possible implications.
The 'bang' occurred upon starting one morning right from the gitgo, then after restarting, the grey screen with the dreaded 'do not enter' sign and it was all over for me. To this day both the computer store tech as well as a hacker friend have only been able to recover the same items I had in cloud storage due to the iphone/ mac connect.

Here around my house -

1994 - 2007 - Windows 95 through Windows 3.1 on a desktop.   Sorta got tired of the constant updates and decreasing backward-compatibility.

2008 - 2019 - iMac desktop with Mac OS through "Yosemite", whereupon my 2008 hardware wouldn't run the next version.

2019 - HP laptop running Linux/Debian-9.    Best of all worlds so far.

I went to Linux and haven't looked back since what was apparently an engineering program caused the blue screen of death on MS.

I may be paranoid but for some reason I don't trust Apple.

Since upgrade to Catalina my bookmarks are no longer displayed by default in Safari when opening a new browser session or new tab in Safari. Instead, bookmarks are visible only by choosing Bookmarks->Show Bookmarks which opens the complete list in the sidebar. I can search for a specific bookmark by choosing Bookmarks->Edit Bookmarks. Do either of those methods work for you? Bookmark behavior in Chrome and in Firefox did not change with Catalina so using one of those browsers could be an option although I avoid google and chrome whenever possible.

I have always avoided installing micro**** applications on a mac so cannot speak to that.

Catalina only supports 64 bit Apps....  Older 32 bit Apps no longer run.  Apple could have done a better job of explaining this.  I lost use of my 10 year old copies software - I guess that's progress?

I found everything else was still there (like Bookmarks) - just slightly rearranged in some places....
Ever onward...

I've been using Catalina ever since the first developer beta release.  The first couple of betas were highly problematic, but by now (MacOS 10.15.1) most of the bugs have been squashed and the OS is very stable and reliable.  Same for the current beta 10.15.2.  My major Mac is a 2014 vintage 15" MacBook Pro, and my wife uses a very recent 13" MacBook Pro.

I always wait for the 2nd or 3rd version of a new OS X. There are too many bugs after Mac changes. I also have two back up Time Machines.
I've got it on a thumb drive and am waiting to hear all the bad things. So far they are bad enough to wait.
I also download bookmarks and other special files and folders/contacts including photos to a flash drive just to make sure I have them stored somewhere special that Apple cannot screw up. Makes me think I might even import all my safari bookmarks into Chrome if and when I move to Catalina.

I just looked and my iMac runs High Sierra.  Sounds like I should just leave it be.

It isn't the most convenient solution, but, you could install Virtual Box (free), and install an earlier version of Mac OS in a virtual machine.
If Virtual Box doesn't support Mac OS VM's (I don't use it, I use VMWare, a similar, but, not free), VMWare does.

There are tutorials online on how to download and install earlier versions of Mac OS.

I would have left my iMac (actually running El Capitan) alone, it's a nice machine, BUT the wireless and the bluetooth had failed on it (11 year old hardware, it had a good run), and a new outfit like it would have been pushing $2000, so I went with the $400 solution .... (Guzzi Content).
