Oil Pressure sensor failure?

Every once in a while, the red triangle of death and oilcan message pop up on the MGX. It is VERY unlikely an oil pressure or pump issue, as the light and warning come on even before you start the bike. Normally the light comes on at initial turn of key, then goes out as the gauges settle, fuel pump cycles etc.

Right now, after all that startup christmas tree action finishes, the red warning triangle, and the oil can come up on the dash. Where is the pressure sensor on the MGX-21? is it in the valley between the cylinders like most others? I'm thinking is may just be a loose connector.

The alarm comes up before the engine has spun over so the pressure at this stage is zero, the switch should be closed.
It could be a loose contact but my vote would be a dud switch.
Yes I think the switch is between the cylinders if it's not at the front of the left cylinder.

The oil pressure switches Guzzi use aren't the best, I have had 3 replacements fail.

Yeah. It's in the valley adjacent to the LH cylinder I believe. Not too big a job on the Cali, just tank off and it's accessible.

Thanks, I'll pull the tank this weekend and give a look.

Anyone know for certain if the Eagles on the Tank covers are pinned in place or stuck by adhesive? I know I don't have to remove them to take the tank off but it will make it much easier.

If it's a similar arrangement to the Cali 1400 Custom, it won't help.  In fact, I reckon you'll probably destroy them trying to take them off.

How so? Looking at the Microfiche, there are 3 bolts on the side panels. One front, one rear, both easily accessed, and one behind the logo, hence the question. I've seen both claimed, but those were old posts.

The side covers have nothing to do with removing the tank, so if that is your reason you can save yourself the time.

But, there are tabs that face outward near both wing tips. You can use a piece of fishing line or some such to carefully pull toward the center of the emblem. Easy to damage though. If you really want to remove the side covers, consider buying a pair of emblems for spares.

Tracking.. I had the tank off 2-3X already, to seal up the leaking left cyl breather and dig out one of the power lead for the fog lights. Mine was cable tied too deep to get to from the front. I have no real need to take them off other than ease of tank removal and general curiosity as to whether they are pinned or fixed by adhesive tape.

I believe the symptoms you are describing are due to the ECU not being able to talk to the sensor. I had the exact same thing going on with my new Audace. The engine had been replaced due to a catastrophic failure. Mine was intermittent however. I had trailered the bike home and when I rode it the following morning doing errands everything was fine. Later in the day when I had some time I got ready to take a nice afternoon ride. The lights were on just as you described. Brand new bike and I was dead in the water. I was advised to pull a valve cover and check for oil flow. Oil flew everywhere so I was good to go. I rode it the next couple of days before taking it to a dealer. Lights were on sometimes and sometimes not. Long story short the dealer found that the connector to the sensor was not fully seated. Happened during the engine replacement. The bike has been flawless since. Probably the wiring or the sensor.

Quick off and on of the tank yesterday, and confirmed it was a loose connector. The spade on the sensor is at an odd angle, and the connector is also on an angle, and when it was installed, they must have kanked it a bit as there was no tension from the connector to the sensor spade. All Good.  Didn't bother trying to take the eagles/covers off. This is the 3rd time the tank was off, hoping not to do it again for a while.....

BTW, do all the 1400's have that big hanking block of metal behind the steering head? (very top of picture directly above the alternator)
