Offbeat Xmas Tunes
« on: December 23, 2019, 06:46:26 PM »
I thought it would be fun to share some of our favorite Xmas songs that are a bit different from the typical classics. After all, Guzzi riders tend to be a bit different, don't we? So post your favorite versions of Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer, I'm Gettin' Nuttin' For Christmas, or whatever other wierd holiday tunes you like. I'll start off by posting one that im pretty sure 99% of the people here have never heard. Merry Christmas from Chiron Beta Prime, everybody!

Blue Xmas with Bill Dorough and Miles Davis.
Pretty cynical, good jazz.  Dorough was the voice behind all the 'Schoolhouse Rock' songs-

Mine is not so much an odd Christmas song, as an odd choice to associate with Christmas.
I always have to play Alexander Nevsky, by Prokofiev, on Christmas.  It's majestic, and wintry, and great music.
And everyone else has to let me, because it's my birthday.  ;)

After seeing this thread, I had to re-upload a Christmas blues / folk song I wrote in 2017. :)

It's not amazing, but it might fit the bill for this thread?  :boozing:

Interesting take....but...I prefer "Run run Rudolph" done in traditional 12 bar R&R by Chuck Berry, Keith Richards or Dave Edmunds...

Generally I like reflective non-secular music.

Why? Because each of us only gets to celebrate Christmas a limited amount of times in our lifetime, and to me nothing symbolizes Christmas so much as the great music that has been written over the centuries, most of it originating in the church.

Some of my favorites are Lo Er a Rose is blooming, Bring a torch Isabella, and maybe the finest of them all Handel's Hallelujah Chorus.

There are lot's of interpretations of old pieces out there as well, such as this beautiful version of O Come Emmanuel.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iO7ySn-Swwc

The rest of the year I like to rock with occasional forays into classical, jazz and certain oldies. Good Music is Good Music, but Christmas music has special meaning for me.

I return you to our regularly scheduled programming.

Phil - Interesting choice. I was not familiar with that one, playing it now from Apple Music. How did you come to associate this one with Christmas? Did a parent play it for you as a child?

Late to the party here, but had a great Cool Yule album on vinyl in my stash somewhere. Always loved James Brown's version here.
