Are you saying the battery is about 12V with the starter button pressed?
If so, it is not a starter magnet.
Scientist have discovered that people will believe anything, if you first say "Scientists have discovered...."

What Wayne said, but I think you meant that the volt meter is that far off from actual voltage at the battery terminals.

If the starter is locked up, the battery voltage will drop way down when pressing the starter button. So it's not a good load test to determine if the battery is good.

It's all sorted. It turned out to be a loose connection in the positive feed to the ignition switch.

I have 2 good batteries, a good starter motor and no blown relays  :wink:

Fired up in an instant too! Love my old Cali !!  :thumb:

Wayne mate, what is the thing about using a jump start, when the battery is good in the first place? I don't get it, and I'm a wee bit puzzled by the notion? ..... Cheers, Mart
