I don't mind wearing gloves, because they protect my hands from cuts, punctures, etc.

While I think several of you are correct in your diagnoses, what I look forward to is pictures of the frame after he has it crabbed.

don't worry, Dusty.. I put a 2X4 between the frame and heads so it wouldn't come crashing down when I pulled the transmission.

I'm *not* a Guzzi mechanic, but this looks ok to me. Maybe just needs a dab of grease?

It's obvious to me that the gizmo has come loose from the whozzix.

Tighten it up and throw a new set of clutch plates at it.

Measure the depth of the hole in the center. Should be around 6.5 mm IIRC.

Unfortunately, for those of you on the edge of your seats (and me)  I'm a 'Merican, and don't have any of those sissy metric bolts to compress the pressure plate, so I'm going to have to make a hardware store run. Then, make a gizmo for the bolt to work against.. so it might be tomorrow until we get to the bottom of this case..
Yeah, I made one once before on the Strada, but when I make a Guzzi tool, I give it to Andy T, and he's 50 miles away.

I own a bike with matching "country clutch" behavior, so I find this very informative to watch  :thumb:

I'm surprised that at 100K miles the splines look that good, I was expecting wear and carnage.

I wouldn't recognize the difference; are those the original lighter 2 mm ? splines or were they replaced with newer improved 4 mm? at some point.

It's inspiring watching you roll your sleeves up and get sh*t done

I've never used the skin barrier creme, impressive. I started wearing light mechanics gloves quite a while ago, but always struggle when it comes to fine stuff.

Those are the improved/later 4 mm splines and not original to the bike. Someone has replaced the clutch at least once already.

Surely you can thread a piece of rod M12-1.5 and can find the same sized nut on the bike or in your stash?

I have (almost) every 'Merican tap and die you can think of but very little in the  way of metric. I really don't have any metric stash, either.  Unfortunately, I came back from the hardware with an M12X1.25.. Doh!  Looks as if I'm done for the day. <grumbling and shuffling off>

Looks a lot like Luap’s 1400, disassembled and all.   Guess now you better put it back together and sell it as soon as possible!   Surely, there is no way it can possibly run right now!!

Coincidence?
I got a spare intermediate plate, when you decide you need one.  Buried in a storage unit in the frozen tundra. Come and get it.
Actually you're gonna have to wait a bit as I'm busy making the earth move down in Jamaica. All is well here.

I feel your pain!

When I went to school it was all SAE but...later when I started back into the design business  the protocol that was common was ..ugh metric..

I had a hard time getting used to KG Lbs. and all the metric metrics.

Now I just do it in the cad systems and have acquired a bunch of the metric tools...I'm an old dog but even surprising to me I have adapted.

What is this "compression tool" you speak of?  I have taken clutches apart and put back together without any special tool.  Including lining up and centering clutch plate splines.
