EV fit question
« on: February 08, 2020, 09:06:14 PM »
I have been looking online and can't find the answer so I thought I would ask the people in the know...
Just picked up a 2002 black and chrome EV... the paint on the tank is flaking around the gas fill...
Will a tank of a 2003 black and chrome EV fit?
I looked at a photo of the 03 tank and I can't see the plate for an internal fuel pump.
I know someone here remembers back to the beginning of the century

cheers
AJ

If it doesn't have a plate for the pump it must be the earlier tank with pump mounted on the frame.

I made phone calls to two different owners of '03 models , one bike is familiar , one isn't . Both have external pumps , but both owners believed there was a mid year change to the internal pump . Go figure .

i concur. There must be 03s that use the external pump. My 02 came to me as a new leftover from the dealer in 04, with an 03 tank on it complete with the "hydraulic valve" decal.

I "believe" that the first 2003 EVT hydros  brought in to the U.S. were "EV Touring I" models and were mostly 2002 models but with the new motor and front crossover.

They were all black and chrome
They didn't have heated grips
They didn't have the powerlet
They had external fuel pumps
They had dual plate clutches

Later the colored EVTs came in as the 2003 "EV Touring II"

Pretty sure 2003 had a mix of internal and external pump tanks.

I'd be curious if there are any black/chrome 2003's that had internal pumps.

fwiw I have a NOS 2003 black/chrome tank (somewhere!) and it doesn't have a fuel pump.

We can do a separate thread with a poll where everyone who owns an '03 model can give us input .

OK , yes , it is Winter here also

Wonder why they changed to an internal pump ?

The internal pump is hard to get to, and even harder to put back in.  I had to pull mine on my '04 to replace a faulty fuel light thermistor, and fitting all that back in the tank was like figuring out a Rubik's cube !

I installed the Moto Guzzi OEM heated grips, and yes it has the cigar lighter standard on the left side by the seat release/helmet lock

Nick... Beautiful bike... mine is nowhere near that...
Dilliw... want to sell that tank???  :azn:

I am going to make sure I get the rest of the bike sorted first before I try and give it a make-over.

Time to search for a thread about which oil to use in the bike

Thanks ahoward125.

i concur. There must be 03s that use the external pump.

I think the early 2003 EVs had the 2002 tanks, with the external fuel pumps. The later 2003 have the 2004 tanks with internal fuel pumps.

That's Guzzi!   :bike-037:

Not sure what I'm going to do with the EVT.  It has a custom tank on it and I always thought that if I sold her I'd put the OEM on her first.  Every time I go down that road, however, I just end up keeping her.

Internal does simplify the plumbing. The external pump setup runs pressurized hoses all over the place. And around 2003, some spine framed models would boil the fuel in the external lines that passed near the cylinder. Stop for gas on a hot day, and it would vapor lock. There you would sit for the next half hour, or you could hope for a rain to cool it off. When they switched to the internal pump, that was cured.
And replacing the external filter stuck in the backbone of the Tonti frame was not easy. In some ways, getting the plate back on there is easier then replacing the external filter in the EV. On my EV, I pulled the plate, repaired a hose that popped off, and reinstalled the plate, all on the side of the road near Rome Georgia once.

Makes sense, thanks  :thumb:

I'm sure the next time I do it it'll be easier...  but, I sure would hate to do it roadside !

Wayne

Your roadside repair story sounds like mine.  We were in Bumf*ck PA and the bike just died.  Fortunately I was sort of expecting it and we were able to re-install the plastique internal fuel line to get us down the road.  A short pause the next day (practice makes perfect) and the OEM plastic lines were replaced with proper submersible fuel lines & hose clamps.  The only real casualty was a full tank of fuel.  On the plus side we met a nice young man (Colin) who gave us a bucket and a syphon hose to drain the fuel.

That repair is still holding after 12years and many thousands of miles...

Cheers!
