Outside camera system..wired or wireless?
« on: February 29, 2020, 12:37:47 PM »
Greetings all!!

Have been looking to install an outside security camera system.

Should I look at wired or wireless systems? What brands does the collective recommend?

Obviously wireless would be easier to install but if picture quality is better with wired
then I will look at that.

Thanks!

My wife and I did a lot of research prior to buying and installing our system. We chose Kuna. It simple replaced the outside fixture, pay and play. Hope this helps.

both can have high quality.. i use wireless for the simplicity of hook up.. i have a few cameras at my moms so i can watch the property. i got cheap TPlink cameras but still show 1080p image. i can watch them live over the web.
i still have wires to feed power to them..I put them in a bird house so not obvious to casual observation. also, i put a night light in the house to keep them slightly warm in winter but the other one works fine outside without heat.
at my home I have Tenvis camera, still cheap but I can control up/down and pan over the internet.. i watch my dogs when not home.

No such thing as wireless - they all need power.

However You can get cameras that are PoE - power over ethernet - thereby running power and data on the same cable. The cameras will need to be connected to a PoE network switch, which aren't much more expensive than regular switches.

When I set up my system I chose to go wired, and plumbed myself some extra data drops around the house in the process.

If high resolution and frame rates are important to you, it's more easily achievable going wired, since your bandwidth isn't hampered by walls, distance, etc. Plus, the cameras aren't competing with other wireless devices.

Going wired is more plug-and-play, since there's no wireless encryption compatibility issues or passwords to mess with - less hackability too.

I went with Hikvision turret mounts

The separate IR light on the RH side gives excellent night vision

I have five of them mounted under the eaves of my house. They've been rock-solid for five years in all kinds of weather. I can count on one hand the number of times I've had to reboot them.

FYI.  We are not allowed to use cameras with any Chinese parts at work.  Spyware is the problem. Not just the images, but computer data as well.

Not true, the cameras can run on batteries, I have a Netgear system and the base station needs to be plugged into your router only.  You need healthy WIFI for it to work good and is a royal pain to have to replace the batteries in the cameras if they are in out of reach areas.  Would not recommend going in this direction.

I have a few cheap Wyze cameras scattered about. Low cost, lots of features. But they only work with a phone app. I set those up for a friend that wants to keep an eye on the dogs inside when she leaves the house. It just work, and is cheap. I understand that there are outdoor housings for them.
I have a Foscam in the garage. Expensive, clunky, slow to pan. But it works on all systems and will FTP a snapshot to me.
I have a cheap USB webcam, plugged into a Raspberry PI. I can do about anything I want with those images, email, FTP, etc. I use this to add an animated image to my home weather station web page.

Regarding wireless, it goes without saying that you need a good, consistent internet speed for them to work.

I've got a 'Ring' doorbell with camera and our internet speeds are not great (but adequate for most things) and getting connected to the camera after the bell is rung usually takes longer than a delivery man is prepared to wait (press doorbell and run being the norm round here!) so it is effectively useless most of the time.

Also if you want to record any goings on, check the camera suppliers setup as many (Ring included) want to charge a subscription for the service.

If you can do hardwired then it is a better option IMO.
