V85TT....Tires
« on: April 06, 2020, 07:28:55 PM »
All right guys.  Not real happy with the Michelin Anakee tires that are stock on the TT.  Not very confidence inspiring, not to mention noisy as hell off center.. Feel like I'm separated from the curves.  Chime in on what you've replaced them with.  One guy already switched to Michelin Road Pilot 5 Trails that are great in wet.  No interest in off-road, so looking for something that will stick to pavement and last.  The occasional dirt road into a campground, that's it.  Watcha got?

I really like the Pirelli MT-60 radials on my V7. Good feedback and minimal buz despite being a 90/10 dual sport tire. On the Griso I ran Pirelli Trail II radials and loved them. Stuck like a road tire w/ dual compound tread but were a bit beefier for bad roads and occasional dirt road usage. I think for your needs they'd be a great choice. https://www.pirelli.com/tyres/en-ww/motorcycle/all-tyres/sheet/scorpion-trail-II

Even being open minded, I don't think a car tire would on a bike that uses inner tubes plus the V85 uses a 150 rear.

Easy enough to make tubeless and a 175 fits nicely on a 150 wheel.

Cam, do you want to keep the ADV look? If so, I've read and heard great things about the Shinko 705.

The other tire that I'm very interested in for my next set of tires on the Stornello is the Bridgestone Adventure A41. They seem to be an all-around great tire excellent wet and dry traction decent road going mileage and stability in dirt and gravel.

Another tire that has gained a lot of popularity is the Continental Road Attack 3. Not sure if they suit your needs, but tons of rave reviews on these tires on the V7 thread on ADV.

I just bought Pirelli Route 66 tires for the convert, but somehow I doubt you'd be interested in those :-)

<SNIP>

I ran the Shiko 705s on my BMW GS and found them grippy but a bit buzzy and noisy given their large block pattern. More of an 80/20 tire.

Yea, the Shinko's have similar tread to the Anakees I want to ditch.  Anyone know what rubber comes on the non-TT version of the V85?  I know they are different.

705's are a better value if you change your own tires. Becaue they wear faster if shops are like around here and charge $100+ to change a set of tire you might be beter off wth a longer lived more expensive tire and incur less changing fee's?

My personal expierence is 705's when new aren't so bad but after about 6,000 mile the front starts to cup and gets loud and buzzy. The rear not so much it just wears sort of fast. Generally a good all around tire.

The Metzeler Tourance Next comes on the non-TT version. https://www.metzeler.com/en-us/products/tires/tourance-next

I don't have enough miles on mine to talk about longevity; seems like a good enough tire, it's black and round and holds air.

The singe color (grey here in the US) sold without the bags for $1K less come stock with different tires.  The tri-colors (red/yelow and red/white) with a red frame come with the Michelin Anakees.

Interesting even on the MG site the red, red/yellow and grey are all listed as TT's.

Look like there are 3 versions? V85TT "Adventure" has panniers and top cas, V85TT "Travel" has panniers and the V85TT has no panniers or top case?

Correct.
AF1 had some deals, maybe still do, with a discount on the standard V85TT but also adding the Adventure aluminum panniers and top case for free. So then the only difference between this V85TT and the Adventure model would be the color, seat, and tires.

I put a set of Avon Trailrider tires on my Quota and love them!   They are a 90/10 road/trail tire.

But they are not known as a cheap tire or as a really long lasting tire ... more of a high quality excellent performance tire.

I've really been impressed with them and plan to put them on my V-Stroms when those OEM tires need replacing.

Agreed, great on-road sport/touring tire with few compromises, and limited off pavement capability. This is likely my next set on the Stornello. I was going to go for the Shinko 705's, but are too off road looking. Have a few friends with the Trail Riders and Pirelli Trails, and they weren't impressed (subjective)  The Bridgestone has a great profile/tread design as well.

A different direction-

I had Michelin Pilot Power Pure on my Ducati...best dang tire I've ridden.  Won't last long, though.
Now I have Pilot Road 4s on it.  They have good grip and show little wear after 4K miles- but the front is starting to cup just ever so slightly.

I looked them up.  They would be the Bridgestone "Battlax Adventure A41",  correct?  Looking for a good balance of performance and longevity.

I replaced the tyres on my V85 TT with Michelin Road 5 Trail on the front and rear after having a couple of scares in the wet.  The differences was chalk and cheese.

These tyres are available in the exact sizes they replaced.  There aren't too many other flavours that can offer the same size.

I might try these next, but first going to put a half used TKC80 on the front to see how that improve gravel traction.

Anyone try this Dunlop?  I think it is pretty new but looks like a nice 70/30 tire or thereabouts.

TKC80's for a big block knobby stick to pavement exceptional well just aren't a long lived tire.
