« on: May 12, 2020, 02:27:43 PM »
mineral spirits works great to clean oily greasy engines and parts. my question is, if im going to clean an assembled transmission or engine, specifically a transmission though, is there a problem if mineral spirits gets inside?  ill assume not, but im not sure, hence checking with you all.  ill try not to get anything in but shit happens

The only thing to be careful of is the seals, Mineral spirits can cause swelling of some material but if your careful, a little inside won't hurt just flush it out with oil.

Yup, I'd also be worried about the seals. Reason I also think so is that I used mineral spirits to put the grips on, and makes rubber feel slimey when wet then stick like crazy once dry, so it does something probably not healthy to seals.. maybe.

Use Diesel; it's cheaper and won't harm seals.

I got a Gas Gas full of water one time and douched it out with diesel. No harmful after effects.

I gathered he was cleaning the outside and was concerned with some of the cleaner getting inside.

I think the original poster was concerned about errant mineral spirits doing bad things, not that he was going to wash the trans internally.
