Bad news from Pie Town
« on: June 21, 2020, 10:35:56 AM »
PIE TOWN, N.M. - Pie-O-Neer Pies, a popular bakery and New Mexico staple in the heart of Pie Town, has closed its doors for good amid --19. They closed on June 15.

Pie-O-Neer’s owner, Kathy Knapp said “You have to be realistic about the money, the bills and the utilities. The overhead doesn’t stop. When there’s no income, you can only put things off for so long; you have to make decisions, choices.” Knapp said they tried alternatives but to no avail.

“We literally don’t have curbs. It’s a remote town with dirt roads. I mean, we’re on the highway. You can blink and miss us, so the delivery wasn’t an option,” she said. “Most of our customers come from other states.”

Dang.   I’ve been meaning to go to Datil for years, and Pie Town was always on my list.

There are three cafes in Pie Town that specialize in pies.  The article describes just one of them.  Frankly, that's a lot of supply for the demand, even in the best of times.  So, unless you've also heard that every café in Pie Town is closed, you can probably still count on stopping for pie.

Last year, I took this photo of these two ladies in the small cafe that's within sight of the one that's apparently going out of business.

We might think that you cannot have too many pie shops in one town; but, evidently, three's a crowd.

I and a friend rode through Pie Town last year...had pie at the Gathering Place...it was good.  Hope they can hang on.  It was worth the effort to ride there.  It's just up the road from the Very Large Array, another worth-while stop.

My wife is driving with her niece from Sacramento to Dallas in a couple of weeks. They are going through New Mexico and are planning a diversion to Pie Town.

I think I've stopped into Pie town about 5-6 times over the last 15 years.  A pity they are closing.  I know the owners would spend part of the year in Mexico and part in Pie Town.  One thing that was always nice was they were not just a pie shop, but also a bit of an art gallery, and frequently had some nice photos/paintings, and the vibe was always pleasant.

I recall on one trip, I had arrived an hour earlier than their opening, and a couple was also waiting...we ended up on the front porch for the hour and then a few more hours inside.  He was the Consul General for the U.S. just retired from his post in Italy, and was moving to either Mauritius or the Seychelles to occupy multiple positions in that final remote location.  We ended up in a wonderful 4 hour conversation about so many topics, easily a few cups of coffee and a few pieces of delicious pie.  One of my fondest places to stop always along the way to visit VLA and passing thru Show Low/Globe on the way to Arizona or California.

A shame. Another one bites the dust. Fine place for fruit pies; except they would never have Northern Spy apples.
A favorite stop in/out of Tucson. R3~
