Advise/Jackal tubed to tubeless
« on: July 08, 2020, 04:31:09 PM »
So I'm getting ready to swap out the tubed wheels that are stock on a Jackal to a set of spoke chrome tuneless wheels from an EV.
The new (to me) wheels came with a spacer-so far so good, but as I'm researching tires I'm being told most will hit the Jackal swingarm and I had better use Lazertech tires, which I dislike a lot.

Right now I have 880's on the Jackal no issues but nobody seems to know for sure if the 880's listed that will fit the tubeless wheels will clear the swingarm.  Seems strange to me unless the wheels are different sizes by quite a bit.

I'm sure you good folks can set me on the right path.  Help a guy out, would ya?

Well I have not done the wheel swap..  But I really cant see any reason why a 130/90 wouldnt fit on the wheel/bike. Same dia as the stock wheel, and maybe it would be a tick off to one side or the other compaired to stock...  But Dont see why it would be a issue. Also share your dislike of Lazertec....

Yep.  I guess the concern is the spacer makes an offset that's just enough to cause the rub.
Hoping someone with experience comes along.  I think they will.

I’ve spent quite a bit of time on spoked wheel swaps.  I’ve never heard of a tire clearance problem so long as you run the same sizes before and after.  If you’re having a clearance problem, my first thought would be that the rear wheel is not located on the centerline of the frame.  I would either string the wheels front to back or at least use a plumb line dropped from the centerline of the frame in front of the rear wheel to check the alignment.

Problems I’ve seen (had) with this swap involve the female drive flange in the rear drive not being the right depth for the tubeless wheel.

The 1998 had clearance issues but 2001 no. 140/80 or 130/90 both ok. Fwiw I switched to Bridgestone A41 on the ev and love them. Cheap too.

Rear drive is different. Spacers are different. Brake caliper mount is different. Axle may even be different.
When guzzi decided to install a cheaper skinnier  wheel they had to make a bunch of new parts to make email fit.

I put an alloy (not chrome) tubeless wheel from a 2000 Bassa on my 2000 Jackal sidecar rig (swapped the front wheels, too). I run 140/80-17 Michelin Pilot Activs front & rear and I am satisfied with them. There's a couple of mm clearance for the rear.

I may be able to help. I am in Rochester and have a 02 EV.  If you want to ride over in a week or so I could pull my rear wheel off and you can see if it fits the Jackel. I have a 140/80-17 mounted on the rim

Thats a hell of a commute. :)

I saw them post up a help wanted notice looking for a part time parts guy early this spring. I Wish it wasnt 2 hours away from me. After 25 years in the auto dealer parts world it would be a nice change up.

Two hours?  A mere flesh wound!

I visit the boys on a regular basis.  Service my bike and assist as much as I can for a few days-and a lot of watching, too.  But I learn a TON from Master Hamlin.

405 miles each way-but a nice ride nonetheless.

A tubeless wheel from a 98-01 EV should swap without issues. The 02 EV was a wider wheel and would need other parts [at least the spacer] to make the swap.

Thank you though

THX loop,
Looks like I have a late 90's wheel set-should be good to go.
Again, thx to all

Not true. The EV vs Jackal etc have the same difference as the later EV vs Stone. When you go to mount the EV wheel you will have ~10mm gap where the flange of the wheel meets the rear drive. This is because the rear drive splines stand proud of the seal about that 10mm. The EV rear drive splines are pretty much flush with the seal.
The Jackal/Stone wheel has a fatter flange to cover that gap. I found this out when I built wheels for my sidecar rig using Stone hubs and the extra fat flange made the wheel not turn due to interference.
Now the front wheel does interchange perfectly, to my knowledge.

I stand corrected then. You would probably need the ev spacer pressed into the rear drive unit then.
