2014 Touring problem
« on: July 21, 2020, 07:50:04 PM »
Looking for someone with a 1400 who has had the same or similar problem and can tell me what this might be. I'm not a mechanic and am bringing it to the shop Saturday so I have no intention of doing tests and troubleshooting, just hoping to maybe give the shop a head start.
Was out camping for the weekend with my son and riding in 85 degree weather. Bike was running fine and stopped a few times after an hour or so to find a bathroom and get a cup of coffee. Because of - we were having a hard time finding both and that is why we stopped a few times. The first time I restarted the bike and took off it had a stutter when shifting from 1st to 2nd, kind of like a dead spot in the throttle or like the fuel shut off for a moment and then ran fine. A few minutes later we stopped again and I shut the bike off. Five minutes later start the bike and had a repeat only longer and also in third, then the bike ran fine. I ride with the headlights and driving lights on and volt meter is between 13.8 and 13.9 which it was when I checked so shut them off thinking possible lack of power causing this and then was at 14.2 volts as it should be.
Stopped about a half hour later and when I restarted problem was worse and then cut out going 45-50 mph, pulled over and was able to restart while moving and once again bike ran fine. All of this riding was stop and go or 30-50 mph.
Stopped at a red light and when I went to leave bike just wanted to cut out and had to pull over. Now the bike would start but when given throttle would just die like it had no fuel. Took the gas cap off thinking it might be some sort of vapor lock but no go. The triangle of death only came on as I was basically holding the starter trying to keep it running to get it to a better spot.
Got something to eat and had the bike off now for a little over an hour. Disconnected the battery for a few minutes thinking maybe the computer screwed up somehow. Started the bike and it ran fine. Rode about 50 miles and stopped for fuel. Started the bike and right back to hardly running again. Disconnected the battery but still would not run. Waited about an hour and a half while coordinating a rescue, started the bike and rode for 2 hours trouble free.
At this point we were back at the campground and didn't start it until the next morning to load it onto the trailer. Started right up no problem and started again to park it when I got home.
Once again really just looking for someone with a 1400 that maybe has had the same thing happen to them. Won't be available to answer questions until tomorrow night but I think I included everything. Thanks.

The closest thing that's happened to my 1400 is broken or defective plug caps, but that just caused poor running over 3500 RPM.  No problem starting or running at low RPM. Let us know what your shop finds, chances are some of us will see the same problem.

That demand sensor / TPS thing has been a problem with some of these bikes.  It's also a problem child with Aprilia using the same part.

It's been mentioned here before.  You might google it.  Just a thought, I am not the mechanical person.

just throwing my two cents in is it possible that you have a bad relay or if the fuel pump is inside the tank is the hose starting to come off the fuel pump that happened on the older bikes and the other remote possibility is it to loose ground strap take care

The problem seems to be heat related but it does run fine until I shut it off and then it won't run until it cools off. To add insult to injury was just washing it before I bring it to Jim's and it's pissing a bit of fluid from the rear drive. Love affair is almost over.

Without going hands on, it sounds like the clutch micro switch. You describe it at shifts and taking off from a stop when it acts up. Guzzi had some issues with the early production bikes. I would start there.

These are pretty sorted bikes.

Have him change out the Demand Sensor during his diagnosis.  See if it doesn't fix the problem.

Make sure you don't take the bike out until that has been looked at this regardless of what they think they've fixed.   :embarrassed:
