May I come back to the fold?
« on: July 30, 2020, 09:45:31 AM »
Well fellers I guess I’m back in good graces with the guzzi crowd as I just attentively bought this 2002 Stone. One owner 9500 miles, garage kept. I’m ashamed to divulge what I got it for.
Any pro or cons offered here with this model will be taken with a grain of salt And greatly appreciated.

That is an example of the most bulletproof injected Guzzi series , good computer , good brakes even though it is a single disc front , no gaudy plastic chrome . Check the valve lash , give a service , put 100,000 miles on it  :thumb:

That’s same year, model, and color Stone that was totaled when I was rear-ended years ago.  It’s a great bike.  Period!

That's simply wonderful.
Since I got my 2001 Jackal a few years ago I've been loving everything about it.  You will, too.
I did have to completely rebuild/renew the charging system-no biggie.

Love it!  I also have a 02 stone..  Metal in my case with the chrome tank, and shiny black fenders. I love it. One of the best I feel, becouse I like the old school adjustable valves. As was said.. the good computer, the good brakes..  Seat sucks though on mine...

I think all the '02 California models are the peak of standard Guzzi in the "modern" era.

Right on!  That is the exact same bike I have and no doubt you got it for stupid cheap like I did.  I've heard people say that the "Flint Orange" is a rare color.  The paint on mine was quite perished, so I resprayed it army green.  No ragrets.  I've got the same style Givi side cases on mine and recently added a Dart Marlin fly screen.  I never thought I'd find myself riding a bike like this, but it has been "stone" reliable and tons of fun!  Met some great people along the way as well.

All pros for you, no cons!

One con for me ... I just can't do the feet-forward/hands-up/butt-down style of touring cruiser ... so that means more for everyone else!

This could be a go-forever bike, you never know.   Hardly broken in yet.

Thanks for the responses guys and the encouraging assessments make me very confident I’ve made a good choice. If y’all remember I’d been looking for a MG of the more simple era after my bout with the TPS issue with the 1400. However I think I may would have preferred the hydro motor but really no big deal. I may need for one of you guys to walk me through the first valve adjustment, face time will help there.
I already sold the little Silverwing and made a couple hundred on it.

Congrats Dan.  I had an '03 Hydro Stone.  Fully sorted with FBF high comp pistons.  It was a rocket.  My stock seat was a one-piece torture rack though.

Only "con" on the '02 would be the black wrinkle paint on the engine block.  It tended to bubble up and peel.  Guzzi was giving owners a full set of bags as compensation for that.

Best of luck,

You reckon they will still honor that bags thing after 18 years? Does anyone have that number so I can call the factory?😂😂😂
Is the seat a two piece seat?

l had exactly the same bike, I repainted the Grey/purple bits black, it looked a lot better. If you keep up on the wrinkle paint with Black trim wax it stops the corrosion and keeps it all good.

I'd hazard a guess and say that's how the PO got those Givi's?  Your seat might be 2 pieces.

You've got the two-piece seat, Dan.  I've heard of the wrinkle paint issue, but mine is looking good!

As I recall, you had your choice of 30 or 40L Hepco-Beckers, the factory bags at that time.

The seat is hour-long at best. Send it off to Jim at Ned's Cycle. Do not pass Go.

The low fuel sensor may be less than reliable. The trip odometer is your friend.

Start a money jar for a new speedo, as the trip odometer may eventually decide it doesn't want to be friends anymore.

Nice bike. That color looks way better in person.

Hey Dan, nice catch. I have the same bike sitting in Florida, I like it..
The only problem I had was an input shaft bearing got noisy at about 30K.
Get some miles on that thing.

Great assessment Mo! So the odometer is the cheesy One that was on my 04, it only lasted to 7K miles.

My stone has just over 10k on it and its starting to get flaky...

As for the valve adjustments.. it really cant be any less effort. If you have ever adjusted a valve on anything at all...  it will come right too you. It was more work adjusting the valves on my lawnmower then it was on the bike.

Great assessment Mo! So the odometer is the cheesy One that was on my 04, it only lasted to 7K miles.

The 04 had the ITI speedo which had their own issues.

Your 02 should have a Veglia. Mine ran to about 30k. With much effort, I disassembled it and lubed the trip odo tumblers and got another 12k out of it. Replaced it with a new Guzzi part. 20k so far, so good.

At no point did the speedo or odometer flake out, just the trip.

I should also mention that I've been through 2 or 3 speedo cables. It makes a fairly awkward turn coming out of the tranny.

Ncdan, I'm sorry to be the one to have to point this out, but I think you got taken. That is the ugliest color combo ever, it has fake mufflers, and everyone knows those saddlebags will not keep a six-pack cold for more than a few minutes. You probably picked this up for $200-$300, and to help you out I'll take it off your hands for $500 just to make you feel better, and so you can brag you passed it on to a bigger fool. I can be there this afternoon. Let me know.
