2017 v7iii low gear issues
« on: August 13, 2020, 05:15:11 PM »
Hi Guys,
I do a lot of riding in city traffic. The last few rides I am having issues in first and second gear. When I am in slow trafffic and I spend any time in these gears, the bike acts like its not getting enough fuel and lurches forward until I get to about 3K rpms and then it stops. If there is little traffic and I just go through the gears to get to a higher gear, its fine.Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks

On the V7's, at least the earlier ones, if there is too much free plsy in the clutch cable it starts to get hard to get it into first, and second, too, may become difficult. The free play at the clutch lever on the handlebar end should be only around 2mm (the width of a small coin) and the gears should start to engage/disengage further away from the handlebar. After the adjuster at the bar has been used up, then it's time to adjust the cable at the gearbox end. There's instructions on here for that - search "V7 clutch adjustment".

Could be clutch adjustment issue.

If you or someone you know is familiar with Guzzi Diag, I would recommend putting a Beetle Map in your ecu. That will take care of any fueling issue that might exist.

If your using the highest octane fuel then it might be time to poke a hole in the tip over / tank vent. Sounds like a vapor lock to me.

Thanks for the responses.I did have extra slack in my clutch cable.Adjusted it and my shifting is better but the problem hasnt gone away.I live in an area with a lot of hills and Ive noticed the sputtering starts on an incline. It doesnt have to be a large incline. Then it continues onto my regular riding.

I don't know about the III, but the earlier 1TB versions were particularly sensitive to the engine oil level. The specified 2 litres was too much - it overflowed into the airbox, contaminated the air filter and coated the insides of the manifold and throttle body with oil. A disaster in bumper to bumper traffic in hot summers days. Spluttering, variable revs, all sorts of bad running. Solution was to clean up the oil in the airbox & the manifold with paper towels, replace the air filter with new, the spark plugs with new as well, and fill the engine with only 1.9L. Re-set the ECU by removing the battery's negative terminal for, say, 10 minutes, then re-attach.

It would also be an idea to check if you have the latest factory map, at least.

Thanks.I just did an oil change and I had heard that 2L was too much oil to refill it with so I put in less.I checked the airbox and there was very little oil in there and I wiped it clean.Filter was spotless.I didnt change the plugs though. As well,I did disconnect the battery to reset the ECU.How would I check to see if I have the latest map?

You would either need a dealer to tell you what map is in there and if it was currrent...

Or, get Guzzi Diag and associated cables and use your laptop. You would still need to know what the current version is and compare it to yours. However, if you go this route, then you can install a Beetle Map.

As I mentioned earlier, if you think it might be a fueling issue, I would consider installing the Beetle Map.  Lots of info on Guzzi Diag on this board. The fueling across the RPM range is spot on.

DISCLAIMER: I do not know if fueling is your issue, but if you suspect that...

I have a 2017 V7 iii racer.  I could be wrong, but I don't think there are different versions of maps for these from Moto Guzzi.  I've only heard of 1 map.

And stock, original map, runs great.

Did your bike used to run OK in these conditions and then got worse and worse?  Or did you not do this much city riding until now? So the issue might have been around for some time and you just never experienced it?

Maybe it is the fuel filter?  Unfortunately replacing that is a pain ... it is inside the tank, a bit tricky to get out, replace, and put back in ... there is a video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VnQX2n9YH2s

It ran fine up until a couple of weeks ago

Ahhh, then I'd leave the map alone.

I'd bet fuel filter.  If you put in a new fuel filter you could also empty out out the tank and be 100% sure it wasn't bad gas.

Another idea, but less likely, is fuel injectors clogged or not working well.  Not sure of your mechanic skills, but there are ways to check/clean fuel injectors yourself.  Here is the semi fancy tool way of cleaning one (dirt bike focus, but same idea): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5LS9_MQWzd0 .   Here is cheap way to do it:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=96sl1lnYyGo  .   And you might find a local shop that cleans injectors so you could just drop them off and have someone else clean them and check the spray pattern.

Thanks for the help!Much appreciated.I am going to look into both solutions
