Plans changed. Riding up to OH, PA

So my riding buddy and another friend changed their plans, so my plans changed. I’m now leaving out Tuesday and riding up to Canton OH. Then Wednesday shoot into Michigan to finally check that state off the list. That will give me all lower 48 and Alaska. Then Thursday we are riding to Lancaster PA. My friend would like to check out some covered bridges. Any suggestions?

Coming back Sunday and Monday on skyline dr / BRP.

Hauto I’ll message you later this week, I’ve been working 12s at work. Dan, I haven’t forgot, I’ll holler later too. Why is it before a vacation work always tries to make sure you won’t miss it?! Lol

Also any good restaurants around Lancaster that do take out PA Dutch or Amish cooking?

 I've lived in the Lancaster area all of my 68 years. There are several authentic amish owned an run restaurants. There are also alot of locally owned family run place that are really good but aren't  amish. One true amish owned and run restaurant in particular, east of Lancaster is called "Katie's Kitchen". They are doing social distance dining in a huge outdoor tent (I'll post a link below) and are located at 200 Hartman Bridge Rd, Ronks, PA. I might ad that if you're looking to have an alcoholic drink with your meal it won't happen at a true amish establishment.

 I have been riding Guzzis since 1972, my wife, dad and 2 brothers also ride Guzzis. I'd love to meet up with you unfortunately dad (88 years old) and I are leaving Wednesday morning on our Guzzis to spend a few days at my camp in north central PA.

I don't think there are any restaurants that specialize in "Amish" cuisine. Most restaurants in the area even where I am 90 miles away have dishes like slippery pot pie, shoefly pie, scrapple, whoopie pies and gravy over everything.


If you want a very good Italian bakery right across from the Lancaster courthouse is a little place called La Dolce Vita. Their baked goods are as good as anything you find in in New York city bakery. They also have nice sandwiches.

I'd also rethink Skyline drive the speed limit is 35mph, it is not nearly as scenic IMHO as the BRP and there is a fee. There are plenty of great roads from Lancaster PA to Front Royal VA to enjoy.

Thanks very much for the links! Katie’s Kitchen sounds like a winner for sure. We’re just stopping by Lancaster on our way to NJ. Travel plans for Friday is to go leisurely from Lancaster PA to Sicklerville NJ. I also appreciate the tip about skyline drive. Ugh, 35 is pretty slow. Not that that’s a bad thing for sightseeing, but one of us has to be back home Monday evening for work on Tuesday. I’ll let them know. This is an annual trip, so next year I’ll be on my Guzzi good lord willing and the creeks don’t rise. I’ll try to plan better. It’s just the current situation is requiring much flexibility.

Just south of Canton Ohio, just west of New Philadelphia, near Millersburg and Berlin Ohio, is the main Amish area of Ohio. Lots of good restaurants in that area.
The southern area of Ohio, near West Virginia, has a ton of great motorcycle roads. The northeast, near Findley and Toledo has corn fields.

Ashtabula County, in the NE corner of Ohio is the state's covered bridge capital. The county engineer up there was a big fan, so several are actually modern. Plenty of originals too.

Sounds like a nice ride. One caveat when you are riding in the Lancaster, and surrounding area. The Amish still travel primarily by horse and buggy. This inevitably will leave horse droppings on the roadway. Super slippery stuff, especially if you are on two wheels. You’ll also notice that many of the backroads have ruts, from years of horse and buggy travel.

+1 on Skyline Drive.  Also, be aware that speed limit enforcement has traditionally been a priority on both Skyline & the BRP, but at least the BRP speed limit is higher and the sightlines along the road (to spot troopers on the side of the road & react accordingly) are considerably longer.

US340 south from Front Royal parallels the Skyline and is still an enjoyable ride. US11 south from Winchester is another good alternative. If I need to "make time" I usually take 340 to 11, then hop on the BRP near Buena Vista (US60) or Buchanan.
