This brings back old memories of my first "real" motorcycle I bought in 1964 (used).  It was a Zundapp 200cc Challenger.  It was similar in appearance.  It was built like a tank (heavy too) and was stone reliable.  A two stroke that got me back and forth from home to school, to work and back again day after day in all kinds of weather......I bet it's still running !!!  The Kid

That was my first road legal bike with the exception that mine was silver and red. Girls weren't impressed but I was enjoying it.

A friend of mine has two of those in need of complete restoration, but not rusted or wrecked. I think they may eventually be mine. Neither have the magneto. What are my options in searching for a magneto for a 57-58 Maico single?

Re a magneto, I’d say you’d need to look in Germany and you might find one.  They are enthusiastic about their ‘oldtimers.’

If you’re up for a big challenge you could buy a Maico street bike and travel around explaining to people that it’s actually pronounced My-Co, not May-Co. I’d give that very little chance of success in the English speaking world :boozing: and “My-Co, Bry-Co” doesn’t make much sense.  But if you gave me a MD-250 (a later street model, their last) I’d give it a shot myself.  They only made a few hundred of them.

Yes, you can find nice examples in Germany / The Netherlands / Belgium...but the issue is "SHIPPING COSTS" to the USA, and then, as you mentioned, there's the challenges of available spare parts, etc.

Still they are way cool bikes to have in the stable! :thumb:  :boozing:

I've always wanted a Maico just for the name and heritage, and after seeing this MD-250 (never saw one before), I'd take it over my other street fav, the RD-350. Good God that's a cool-looking bike.

Years ago, before I bought my '74 Honda CR125 (brand new, like $500), I test-rode a Maico 125 (motocrosser). I rode it only to say I rode a Maico. Sure as hell wish I bought it so I could say I OWNED a Maico.
