Windshield Plexistar II 98 Cali V11 EV
« on: October 17, 2020, 05:51:32 PM »
1998 California V11 EV and a National Cycle Plexistar II, part number #8332-01
$171.62 @ SoCal Powersports, delivered.

I read the instructions.  Read them again.  Meh.....  It went together fairly quickly.

WARNING :  THE LOWER ADJUSTMENT RODS WILL HIT THE TANK
at full lock.  I cut two inches off of these, and solved that little issue.

Here's the clearance on the fork tubes and the turn signals.  It's a bit close, but OK.

More

Perfect day to check out a windshield with 20-30 mph winds and 40 mph gusts.  Rode about 30 miles of 2-lane and 15 miles on interstate.  80 mph (indicated) was stable and I had good wind protection.  Not Gold Wing wind management, but respectable for a cruiser-esque motorcycle.

I'm 5'9", 29" inseam.  In a relaxed riding position, this windshield line (as adjusted) is near the bridge of my nose.

Once you get tired of being buffeted to death, you might raise it and lean it back.

John - I read some of those threads, but not having a buffeting issue with this one, as it is adjusted now.  Although, it does get very quiet if I hunker down behind it.   Might be something to try.

In the past, we've always either purchased, or fabricated some manner of lower wind deflector.  These two use mounting hardware from Memphis Shades, and 0.20 plexiglass from the local home improvement store.  I have zero artistic talent, so a lot of cardboard gets wasted while trying to figure out the shape and it's a good thing that the Wife is supervising me.
 :boozing:

Here's an OEM Harley offering.  This particular bike was terrible without those lower wind deflectors.

Looking at your photos again, it does appear that you raised the fairing over the instruments and have a nice vent gap there.  That's the secret of making the fairing work.

The Plexi Faring 3 is much better.  It does have lowers, so perhaps that's the secret?  I thought you were getting a PF3 for this bike, why did you settle for a PF2?

That PF3 got installed on the 2000 Jackal.   It's very functional, but a bit large.

So, lets try a PF2.  Why not ?  Curiosity, perhaps.

I would have left the '98 EV alone, but it had some serious cracks at three of the windshield mounting points on what I can only describe as a monster of a windshield. The previous owner had also installed lower wind deflectors.  It went down the road like a leaf on the wind,  but you could probably light a cigarette behind it, with a BIC lighter.  Dead calm.

So, minor experiment, smaller windshield.  Less wind effect on handling.  Very happy, so far.

I didn't realize there were two different bikes.  However, had I known that you wanted a PF2, I'd have offered you mine.

If I'd known that you wanted one, I'd have sold you the one from the CalVin. It's alright, I just don't care for it. So I'm going to get rid of it and put base a stock clone from Rifle.
