Praise for GuzziSteve & Beetle
« on: October 27, 2020, 09:34:27 AM »
WOW!
So I have been struggling for 3(?) years with intermittent attempts to re-map my bike with Guzzi Diag.  I ordered cables and downloaded the program a ways back- couldnt get it to work, so I put it aside. A year later I bought a Stucchi y-pipe and tried again with the help of someone more computer literate than I on a different laptop... No luck then either.

I set it aside for a while, but I was growing increasingly frustrated with my continual pinging issues (my bike had the 'newest' stock map, but an aftermarket exhaust with no DB killer- installed by PO); and while moving house I got really angry about all the crap in my garage that I had to transport to store at my new house (including the stucchi y-pipe)!
SO  I bought another set of cables and tried with another laptop to get Guzzi Diag to work for me-- but no joy.  I traded emails with Beetle, posted in the tutorial thread, tried and tried again but had no success.

I did break down eventually and post here about looking for someone in my area experienced with the program to help get me rolling.  I got offers of help from Antmanbee & Wayne O but distances are far and I could never seem to get there.

Well, I am happy to say that after something like 6 years of CARC ownership, I finally got me & my bike down to GA and GUZZI STEVE helped me get sorted with a nifty BEETLE map (this is a massaged 1200 Sport 2v map) into my 07 Breva 1100.

I only had a few minutes of seat time while we were were fiddling with the bike, but yesterday I hurried home to get on the B1100 and take it out for a real shakedown. I rode about 70 miles on a mix of back mountain roads, blue ridge parkway, and high-speed city beltway riding.

Happy to report that the bike is running great.  My ping is gone. Choppy on/off throttle at low speeds is gone. The bike revs more freely, spinning up to 6k+ with the flick of the wrist.  It's sweet and smooth at 4500 rpm, right where I like to ride it.
It feels quite a bit more powerful but not sure if that is true HP gain or simply less careful babysitting of the throttle to avoid the pinging. In any event, the bike is singing and riding like I always thought it should!

I also must say it sounds great! The open y-pipe and the unrestricted Staintune with the new map really deepened the exhaust tone and its got a nice bark on the throttle, with a snarl on the overrun (no popping) that made me grin every time I cracked open the throttle.  It's a little louder overall, but not offensively loud and booming like my v65 with the totally open Agostini carbon cans on it.  It doesnt sound as good as the v65 (2-1 vs 2-2 setup?) but it's a huge improvement and the volume is manageable even without earplugs.

overall I am a very happy customer!

All I need now is some stepper motor help, it seems to hang at a 1300-1500rpm idle about 1/2 the time. Steve blew it out with some carb cleaner, but it's only dropping to the correct idle some of the time. I will have to research the metal vs. plastic models and see what I can do about that.

Big thanks to Beetle for the map and Steve for the alley-oop dunking it into the ECU!

Glad everything came full circle for you. I've been happy with the way my 1400 has run over 28k now. I may pull the trigger myself in the future. Glad your happy. BK

Were you able to bring one of your laptops and have Steve use it to do the Guzzi Diag work, or was it on his machine? Hope you are able to use it yourself, is a great tool.

I dont actually have a laptop, just a Chromebook which is more or less a tablet with a keyboard and not supported for Guzzidiag. In the past I used my old MacBook, my godson's laptop, and my wife's work laptop all to no avail.. In this case Steve used his laptop and cables, which at least assured me I didn't have a bum connector on my bike. Best guess right now is that I somehow ended up with crappy cables twice? Not sure how that would be possible, I bought the set linked in the guzzidiag threads by Beetle, albeit 3 years apart.

My wife is very knowledgeable in regards to the laptop part. Therefore the guys here has been able to simply walk us through the procedures of downloading maps as well as making adjustments on the existing maps. Once you get to the place of having the capability of hooking up your bikes computer with Guzzidiag (first you must get the correct hardware) there are several guys here that can walk you, over the phone, how the procedure works. In fact over the last two years we have been guided by some of the guys here to the point that the last map change I made on the Stone we were able to complete the process by ourselves.
There are guys here that gladly give their experience to the guys on this forum. I’ve found out in the past several years I’ve been a member of WG, just ask and you shall receive 👍

I can't speak to the old Apple laptop but you're right the Chromebook will not work and not sure about your wife's laptop but your problem was not your cables it was the computer you were using.

Glad you're finally able to get it loaded enjoy!

Throttle Body cleaning helps with the whole process not just the stepper but the butterfly area gets pretty grungy & sticky. You only have to pull the airbox first. It gets better ea time you pull it. Silicone spray helps.
GuzziDiag always works fine for me, no glitches yet.

Is high idle only when pulling the clutch in first gear, fi at a trafic light. Try it that is, if when you put it in neutral and release the clutch if it goes down.

Nah, you can put in neutral on the side stand, let it sit and idle, it doesnt come down.  On initial startup it goes high and then settles somewhat, but still higher than it should be.

It's not racing up at 2-2500 idle or anything, just a few hundred RPM than it should be, and it's not every time... I would say 60% of the time.
