My first REAL motorcycle was a 1971 Kawasaki Trail Boss. Bought used from owner in Newark, DE for $300 with money earned doing odd jobs for neighbors.  Photo from 1973.

My first NEW motorcycle was a 1978 Yamaha XT500 bought from Maryland Yamaha in Brooklyn, MD (just south of Baltimore) for $1395.

My first NEW motorcycle was a 1973 Honda 450, green with gold striping.  I sold my 1971 MGB to pay my last semester's tuition and bought the bike with the left-over money.  I regretted it within a few months since I got a job about 30 miles from home and it got pretty cold commuting through the winter on that bike - back in the days long before heated gear was commonly available.  My second NEW bike was a left-over 1984 Goldwing Standard, bought in 1985.  Several used bikes came & went between those 2, and only 2 of the many bikes I've owned since then were bought new.

That very bike was the SECOND new bike I ever owned.   $700 out the door.   It did everything it said on the tin.

My first bike was a new 1970 Kawasaki Trail Boss. My first road bike was a used 1968 BMW R60 US. In 1972 I sold it and bought a new and my first of many Guzzis. An 850 Eldo. I have ridden nothing but Guzzi ever since to this day.

OK .... go easy on me, guys!  Nothing classic about my re-entry into motorcycling in 1984.  I was working for 3M Company, and they'd negotiated some sort of barter arrangement with Yamaha USA.  3M had traded a couple of warehouses of microfiche readers for a couple of warehouses of unsold Yamaha motorcycles ?!  Buddy of mine called me and said 'if you ever wanted to get back into biking, here's an opportunity.'  And it was ....... price was reallllllly good.

So I got back into riding in 1984 on this 1983 Virago 750.  I immediately installed lower bars, and set back pegs, along with better suspension.  Rode this old gal for 17,000 miles, sold to a fellow 3M'er, and moved on to BMW.  My 2nd new bike was an '85 K100RS

Only wish the more Euro TR1 (enclosed chain drive) had been available

I'm glad there are people out there to buy new bikes. That way I can buy them a few years old with no miles on them for half the price  Joking aside, I have thought about it but there is nothing currently made that grabs my attention. Plenty of bikes I'd like to ride, just nothing I'd shell out the money for.

My first NEW motorcycle was a 1959 200cc Ducati Americano, routinely ridden from Norfolk, VA to Philly & New York. Stopped at a light in Queens and had an Italian fellow run up to me to say that he was thrilled to see a Ducati in NYC.

in the 1970's and early 80's I had a Suzuki (150 Street), Yamaha (DT1), Honda (XL350), Kawasaki(100 Trail Boss) and another Honda(SL100) All of them bought used.
When I got back into riding in 2008, I started with Kawasaki KLR 650 (used) Suzuki Gs 750 (really old but kept nice)

and my first new motorcycle.....

2008 Moto Guzzi Norge. I still have it with 42,000 Miles on the clock

I had the talk* early and so I've never purchased a new motorcycle or car.

*You know, THE talk. The talk about new vehicle depreciation. The burning $5 bill made quite the impression.

My dad bought me a new Indian around 1975.  It was has a 70cc dirt bike, that I only got to ride on occasion as my folks split and things went to shit.  But it was very cool to a 8-12 year kid and got the bal rolling.

My first actual new bike I bought was a 96 Honda Nighthawk 750.  Great bike, but it wasn't a Guzzi, and thus only lasted 18 months or so until I convicned my wife we could afford a new Bassa!  From their, never looked back.

Bought an Ossa 250 Pioneer new in 1971.  I was 17, and it was my do-all bike.  Miss it more than any other bike I've had since then.

My very first motorcycle was new!  A Honda QA-50, gift from my parents.  I think I was 11.  Rode it all over the farms in my area in southern VA.

After that I bought bikes with my money from odd jobs, so several no so great used bikes.

My first real street moto, bought new, was a Honda Hawk 400, really an awesome bike. Couldn't find a pic of that, so here is one from the internet:

After only 1 season of riding, i bought this... 1995 Ninja ZX-7.  i figured that if it was good enough for Scott Russell to win on, it had to be good enough for me.  Wow what a beast it was.

A friend of mine bought my old CB-160 Honda, then moved up to a 200cc Honda twin, then a CX500.

He then traded that for a new V45 in 1983.   He wanted me to ride it first to give him an idea of what it would be like.   I can remember opening it up (as far as was consistent with break-in rules, which was pretty far) and being absolutely AMAZED at the power relative to his earlier bikes.   Warned him to be careful .. but after a thousand miles or so, he was slaloming through urban interstate traffic at full chat ... !!

I was in the Army stationed at Fitzsimmons Army Hospital. I had a side job working on Honda motorcycles in a retal shop. I worked nights and weekend and pretty much saved almost every dollar. I was riding an R50/2 at the time. It was sadly underpowered for mile high Denver and the high passes when I got a chance to ride. When BMW announced the new R75/5 I ran down to the dealer and put down a deposit for one. The first one arrived in February and was put in demo duty. I was to get the next one. In June I was told the dealer was getting only two more for the year and since they had deposits on those as well I was offered the demo. I took it and over the next few years put just short of 100,000 miles on it. It was a good bike even though it had a few early production issues.
