Today is the day.....

It is 60 days (well 59) since my knee replacement. The knee and leg feels great. Range of motion is good, not as good as I want, but I am leg pressing 250lbs, and have no issues or pain, so I'm going to be throwing a leg over the Convert to bring it back to the house from the Storage unit, and put the 912 in the Storage as we have bad weather coming.

I just finished an overhaul and upgrades to the Porsche, and though I have a few things to do, I need to get it out of the weather, as it has been in my driveway on jack stands since April.  Of course a long drive before and long ride after making the switch is in order.

Installed a quick disconnect jumper cable and trickle charger lead.




Installed a high torque starter which is fantastic and solves the cold and hot start issues from the weak stock unit, and a 917/Corvair style central fan.  Put 500 miles on the upgraded system, and temps are outstanding, and the motor is much smoother not having the big squirrel fan hanging off the end of the crank. Also installed a full flow oil cooler with thermostatically controlled fan.











But truth be told, I really miss riding and the Convert in particular. Went over and started it yesterday, kicked right over, even after sitting for 4 months. Now I just gotta get out of the house before SWMBO gets back from her morning run and the house if filled with her 'running group' ;-)

Put in a nice hundred miles on some of my favorite roads. Went down to George Washington's Mount Vernon then up to great falls and worked my way around to Clifton, then to the storage unit.

The convert started right up, pulled it out and then backed in the Porsche. Went for about 20 minutes on the convert, but as it was 45° with blowing winds and no sun things got a little chilly. Such a wonderful bike, but I was really missing the handguards and heated grips from the V7

Picture below is from a little country store in Clifton Virginia. Is a great little town and on the second Sunday of every month they have a motorcycle and car gathering.





Tucked away with the Griso, who is feeling very abandoned. I shuffled things around enough at my garage at the house to make room for it so we'll go pick it up soon.





The knee and hip felt great even moving the bike around so I think I'm good to go.

Is a wonderful car. Total life long dream car, and hard to believe that 10 years ago I pulled it out of the woods after having sat for 14 years. Took five years to do a total tear down and rebuild. I did everything myself with the exception of having the heads redone and the final paint and body work.if this was a 911 (6cyl OHC) I probably could not have afforded it. A total rebuild on the engine would have cost me more than it did for the rest of the project combined. The *EDIT 912 has a 4 CYL 914 motor based on a modified VW Type 4 engine. It had been painted three times the last it looked by a handbrush and I decided to return it to its original factory color. I've wanted one of these cars since I first saw one in the 1973 opening scenes of The Movie LeMans, then again in the 1990s movie spy games.

Part of the reason I did the cooling system upgrade was that the original factory fan and pulley system for the alternator would eat fan belts at the rate of one per 500 miles, would throw belts, and provided marginal Cooling. The new system address is all of those things. Very happy.

Yeah, the 1976 912(E) was a 1 year oddity, less than 2K made, and only for the US market. A few Targas, and Sunroof cars, a few with AC, but most were like mine, basically a base 911, with a modified 914 engine. Had different heads, some changes to the case and crank, a different FI system and cam, and a different input shaft to the 911's transmission.  As the engine compartment was a huge rats nest, all the original FI and Ignition system was FUBAR.  Converted to new electronic ignition, Dellorto Carbs, big cam, swivel foot adjusters and roller rockers with a 250cc bump in displacement, the motor made 165 at the crank and 135 at the wheels. Stock was 80 if I recall. Is fun on track days with a 50/50 weight distribution, and euro ride height.
