V85 throttle remedy.

I'm going back into mine. It will be pretty painless now with those screws out.

When I removed that second security screw, the cover came loose and the spring uncoiled before I noticed how it was attached. I THOUGHT I had reattached it with about a turn removed.  But no, I apparently just put it back like it was. A long ride yesterday has my wrist in pain again.

There is no reason for that much spring pressure on an electronic system. Obviously some worthless lawyer pulled that off.

Plan B and plan C

For plan B:
When I first disassemble the throttle, I lost the original spring position. I THOUGHT I had returned it to a position with less force, but no, I think I put it back to the original position.
So I just disassembled it again (easy now) and relocated the spring from what I will call 1/2 turn, to resting on the aluminum clamp at maybe 1/4 turn. Wow. much better.

For plan C:
For my first pass, I had given the spring and such metal bits a tiny shot of ACF50 to prevent corrosion. After putting it back together I noticed that the throttle would 'tweak' a little when I would go over large potholes and such. Turns out some ACF50 got on the handlebar and made the throttle too slick. So, while thinking about that, I compared the V85 to my EV, which I have over 130,000 miles on and no real throttle complaint. I don't have a device to measure it, but I'll bet the EV needs as much or more force to twist the throttle. But the EV has enough drag in the system, that there is little force needed to HOLD the throttle. So for plan C, I am going to try an o-ring or such on the throttle just to see if the drag is maybe all that is needed in the first place. Of course I have it so light now that any drag on it would be bad.

For some reason I was thinking that the initial preload was 1 1/2 turns. So from there, I thought my 1/2 turn was going to be great. No, it turns out that 1/2 must be stock.

I like the Biltwell Renegade grips with their larger middle diameter. On my V85TT they do make the pull feel lighter w/o having to do the spring surgery. I'll ride with them, a Crampbuster and the cruise control for a while. Will consider the spring unwind after the season is over.

If using the cramp buster on a V85 you need the name brand. I had 2 sets from China and they just slip. I put sand paper on the back side and it helped a bit.

I have used the cramp buster type device on my bikes and they really help.  To keep them from slipping I usually dremmel several cross grooves on the inside.  Leave the burrs for better grip.

Once you get over the shock of how easy it is, you’d never go back.
Did you remove one full turn, so as to halve the load ?

I have heard the (partially justifiable) criticism, that it’s harder to hold the grip at a steady setting over bumps.
This is not entirely untrue but it can be learned.
 The only argument that could  be made, is that the heavier throttle necessitates the “locking” of your wrist to a larger degree, but that contributes to fatigue. I do not see why the grip needs such a heavy pull when it is not having to overcome any throttle springs or pre loaded quadrants.
An addition.
I don’t wholeheartedly agree that a heavy throttle is easier to hold still, since no matter how heavy the pull is, you still are balancing the wrist force against the spring for a net zero torque.
It’s the bouncing of the mass of your right arm over bumps or undulations that feed through to the ‘grip.
You just need to develop the required finesse.

Simple fix.
In addition to unloading the spring, slip a large rubber oring over the end of the throttle. The added friction eliminates the 'floating' throttle feel.
