4 leading shoe brake handle.
« on: March 01, 2021, 12:48:09 PM »
I am just getting my V7 Sport out and doing a punch list. I noticed the front brake cable connector twists a little bit when engaged. I just finished this project and have never used a 4 leading shoe front brake. So correct adjustment is probably the culprit. I will be reading through the usual websites and manuals to get the jest but any tips would be helpful.

Yep, adjustment. Once the cables are correctly adjusted, that balance bar should be perpendicular to the lever.

Maybe I don't have the right model, but it appears your missing some linkage parts.

I can't see what is out of shot, but the only things missing in the photos are the two rubber boots.

for a minute I thought maybe the V7 used a different type of lever. Now I know that proper adjustment will work.
I left the rubber boots off so I could see how things worked.

You've probably replaced the cables (?) during the rebuild.  If not, one (or more) wire broken on one of the cables will allow some stretch and the cross bar will cock like that.

It that cross bar is not square, the brake won't work well- no matter what the reason.

I worked hard to get it all put together, now I have to adjust the brakes etc ... also just getting used to the drum brakes. So as it warms up in Kentucky. I ride a little and tweak a little.
When I saw that twist in the cross bar I thought it best to ask right away.

Comparing the two pics above - before and after paint job- the actuation arms on the right side panel (before paint) are poorly adjusted, installed wrong or both.  Can't see if cable is connected or not(?) The actuation arms on the left side (after paint) look much better.  That's what both sides need to look like.

Your bike looks like it may have had a similar ridden hard & put up wet past like mine.  If the brake plates have been completely disassembled in the past, fiddled with, adjustment of threaded connecting rod between arms, whatever, a methodical service is pretty straight forward.

All parts need to be properly indexed on each brake plate as well as phased to the opposing brake plate before you'll produce good adjustment for the best braking perfomance.  Sometimes this requires rotating the actuation cam slightly before installing the arm to "preload" it so the brake shoes contact the drum surface at the same time and rate.   None of the adjusters should be extended significantly- less than halfway if not much less.  The hand lever should be well off the grip when braking. Everything needs to happen at the same time and same rate.  You want quick contact to allow the most available leverage to remain throughout the system for best braking.

The complaints about these 4 shoe brakes being lackluster is very true if they are not properly adjusted.  It isn't hard to do it properly and it's worth the effort.  If you have questions along the way, call or email and I'll help
