The article is for the most part an unusually detailed history if the small block. I don't know enough about them to say how accurate it is, but there were some points here and there that sounded a bit "off".

While technically correct, I don't think I've ever heard of any Guzzi motor being repeatedly referred to as a "V2" as though it were a factory designation.

I'm sure others here can pick it apart where warranted.

Perpetuating the myth that the 600 car engine, "Mechanical Mule" engine and the V700 engine were the same.

If they drop a bike that's even just a wet head (preferably full water cooling) I'm interested right from the outset. The V85 is lovely but I'd love to get the Guzzi character with a liquid cooled engine as well...

We will most definitely see a new modern Moto Guzzi in September. As for when you will be able to buy one??? Don't hold your breath for spring 2022.

Some good, some bad.. some right, some wrong.. I will say if a stock v65 can do 115mph, I'll eat my hat! Of course I'm a large man, but even with improved jetting, open exhaust and filters, and a lot of weight loss... Doing the Ton isnt guaranteed. Maybe if you try it Rollie Free style?

A friend of mine knows Bruno de Prato and has a lot of respect for him, but I’ve noticed his articles say some funny things, for example that the Weber carb on the 750 Paso worked well... I think this article fits his pattern of including some artistic license!

If I remember correctly de Prato and his wife were long ago married by Fabio Taglioni or some such thing so he certainly has been around the Italian bike industry. The same friend tells me that De Prato has good connections inside Piaggio’s engine group, so there’s likely some kind of engine in development. I wouldn’t take the “totally new” part on face value, it could be be but it seems to me it could also be a further development of the small block beyond the V85.

If there is a new performance bike, it sure would be nice to take delivery at the 100 Aniv, enjoy the celebration and then do a European riding tour.

Maybe for the 101st new century celebration?

That would work for me as I will be a GEO Bachelor for work again. It's always much easier to make new acquisitions under such circumstances.

Cycle World online has an excellent article just out. It covers the history of the small block, and importantly the details of the new 850. It turns out that it is indeed based on the V85, with many downgrades in components and they are all listed. Less costly materials are used as well as the one piece connecting rods on a pressed together crank shaft as in the V7iii and current V9. MG are clearly intent on keeping the V7 and V9 entry level while boosting the power somewhat. I assume that they will be able to use many of the parts from the V85 for efficiency. The parts diagrams are available to dealers now so parts can be cross referenced to see if someone wants to.
Come on Guzzi give us a premium sport bike with the full V85 engine to complete the small block line.

Sport bikes from a high performance level, sure, but who says MG can’t have some sporty with a little power? They have their own racing pedigree, albeit inconsistent / intermittent. Besides, of the lot, Guzzi’s shown the most versatility. No reason to pigeon-hole it to nostalgia.

Piaggio IIRC is for Moto Guzzi to make cruising/touring/standard/DP bikes. Aprilia is for the sporting end. You have to convince the owners of Moto Guzzi to make a sport bike. Good luck!

For true performance bikes ready to hit the tracks with the best of ‘em, absolutely—Aprilia. But ain’t no reason why Guzzi can’t be allowed to put out something that nears the vicinity of a Thruxton or a more modern-looking sport in capability.

Moto Guzzi can make one but that's not what's limiting them in doing that. They have their areas of concentration like Aprilia does.
