One of Finland's Ralley world champions tested this US-race once (1988). At the time it was still sand road.

I think bikes are no longer allowed at the Pike’s Peak race after a fatal crash last year (or maybe the year before, don’t remember).

Had a near fatal accident himself, but returned to more glory.

I have always wanted to go and watch the racing live on the mountain but just never had a chance.

I will say though that the ride up to the top is worth the view. Especially in the summer time. It is the best way to cool off when it is 98 F/37 C down on the Front Range and as dry as a popcorn fart making the climb up to the top is worth it. 65 F/18 C.

Looking at the last couple of years the electric bikes are going to dominate due to not being effected by altitude and length of race not being an endurance problem.

It is a great ride up to the top. I try and do it every year but sometimes get distracted by other things so it has been a few years since I have been up there.
I do remember the the last time I did go up though, it was late June and unseasonably cool with day time highs only in the mid 80's (F) on the Front Range (this is what we Coloradans refer to as the eastern slope of the Rocky Mountain Range) About mid way up the mountain from the mid-point brake check station I was hauling ass running up the mountain unopposed with no other traffic to deal with. It was awesome! I had just got in to the kinky section above timberline when I caught up to some slow moving riders. Now, it was only about 73 F down at the base of the mountain when I started heading up being it was still pretty early in the day. But when I caught up with these guys at over 11000' it was easily down in to the mid 40 degree range, I don't recall. What I do remember is this, they where a pair of guys on Yamaha Virago's with Pennsylvania plate's , they where only wearing leather vests for protection, and when I saw them at the top they where blue from either the cold or lack of oxygen, probably both. Even I as a Colorado native can only tolerate the 14000' elevation for an hour before I get a damn headache. But it is still the best way to cool down in the summer around here.

I frist went to the top of Pikes Peak on my '71` Ambo in '72 when the road was all gravel. The two gas stations at the base advertised to get your carbs reset. The Ambo made it but a little weak at the top.

Now the two former gas stations are tourists shops. i rode back to the top on the Breva 1000 without a bit of hesitation.

I've heard (wink) that the scenery is mighty fine watching chicks get out of their cars at the COLD top.

Great video. The driver must have been an ole country farm boy as we all drove on dirt roads in that manor, with a baccker sled chained to the back of a pickup going back to the field😂😂😂

You're right. From here (middle of nowhere ... some 3500 people lives there).

He also won long distance Paris-Dakar rally 4 times.

Four years ago my friend Leo rode his bicycle up Pikes Peak as far as he could before snow stopped him. 12 miles IIRC. He was only 83 years old at the time...

Yes but quite a hill for sure.

I can remember a group of folks from this forum did indeed conquer the mighty peak and I on board a carbed CX 100 (which ran perfectly).

There was snow on top..in July me thinks.

We all behaved by the rules except one of our members actually crossed the yellow center line on the way up and was dressed down my one of the polite rangers. Said ranger was alerted by wireless com by another ranger stationed near the top observing our group w/binoculars.

Weren't you a member of the wild bunch on this caper??
