Saved my pennies from lawn cutting and the sale of a mini bike and bought a Yamaha 80 when I was 14.
I had 2 older brothers that broke my parents in on early onset motorcycle ownership so they were cool wth it.
Man I thought I had a race bike only I enjoyed off roading it. 3 trail gears and 3 street. Still not sure they were any different but it was cool.
Homemade expansion chamber from my brother and a new seat cover from mom.
See it WAS a family affair!

1971 Moto Guzzi Ambassador bought in 2003. I was 32. Still have it though it needs a deep tune up.

In the spring of 1977 I was working at a car wash. Bud offered to sell me his Suzuki 150 for $150. It was not running. I took him up on it. Someone had painted "Smokey"  on the side covers. I was able to get it running and I used it for over a year before I broke the generator / regulator. Every other bike that I have owned has been better than Smokey.

http://vintage-suzuki.com/product/1975-suzuki-rm125s/

Bought brand new in August 1976 aged 16 and cost NZ$1448.67 (iirc) after a $300 deposit and HP.
A RM125S model with factory revised cylinder and Mikuni VM34. (unlike the lower horsepower M version)
Most of it is in boxes along with a couple of spare engines and would be rare in the US as in the link.

That was followed a 1974 Kawasaki 250 S1B triple (250cc limit for newbies) in 1977, a Triumph 500 and a 1974 Kawasaki H2B 750 in 1980 (which I still have)

16 yo then poof, in your 60's. ?

I still remember signing paperwork or something at the dealership (Colmans Suzuki on K Rd)
The sales dude is filling out stuff and asks if I had ridden a motorcycle, I said I had ridden a Puch scooter (3 speed shift on the left hand grip) and a Motobecane moped at the local dirt track a few times (and now buying a 5 speed piston port MX bike)

He looked up and said "OK good luck with that and carried on.

A few years later I was test riding the H2B (dealership) and could not hear what the dude was saying before I pulled away (He was saying first was up N-1-2-3-4-5)
I could not get into first ? so shifted up into 2nd and used appropriate rpms for a 2nd gear start (it was in first gear)
It made for a fairly radial entry (wheel in the air) to the world of Kawasaki H2's.
When I got back from round the block test ride the salesman was still laughing.

75 Suzuki GT380 bought as a left over in 76 for I think $1100 it was cheaper then the CB400 or RD. I put 9K on it in one year then I sold it to buy a 77 XS650 Yamaha , I went from a vibration free ride to I can't see because my eyes are shaking at speed.

She wasn't the first ridden, but the first I'd owned. This was taken minutes after Anni was delivered.

Great picture. True motorcyclists are born, not made.

First ride—1966 S90  i think it was $320 out the door— still in the garage. It was redone in the late 90’s and gets ridden monthly

I had access to  several small Hondas when I was young but the first bike that I owned was this 1977 GS400. Put about 40,000 miles on it before getting my T-3.

GliderJohn

My first street bike was a 77 GS400 also. Really a GREAT first bike..  Did everything a new rider could want.

Off road I started on a early ATC90 at about 7 years old. A '69 minitrail a few years after. Only of them I still have a picture of is the Mini Trail....

An mid 60's Honda 90 Sport that I bought for $50 in 1969. The kickstart shaft splines were stripped, so bump starting was the only option. Mom said only one of us could live at the house, so I kept it in my next door neighbor's garage.

My first two wheeler was a Bianchi scooter. I didn't have it too long as I replaced it with a YG1T Yamaha trailmaster. I put 17,000 miles on that little guy. It was a good bike considering what I put it through. I replaced it with YDS3 as I moved up the ladder.

Not really a motorcycle, but it was great - Puch Monza 50cc:

Sadly I have no pictures of the actual bike.
I got it from a guy who had some crashes and retrofitted it with a larger fuel tank and painted it in a hideous but somehow appealing neon-blue color.
Hey, it was the 80s ;)

Still ran great for what it was, and I hate myself for selling it.

Cheers,
D.

My 1973 RD200 was already a couple of years old when it became my first "real" bike. (I had a Honda Z50A before that.)  Exciting acceleration once it hit the power band. I found out quickly that the powerful front drum could easily lock the ribbed tire. I learned to never leave the house without spare spark plugs. (We had a foul relationship.)
Pic is not mine but identical model and colour. If I remember right the alternator and starter motor were one and the same!

My first after a lawnmower engine powered mini bike.

Still have fond memories of that bike. Saved all my birthday and lawn and yard $$ to buy. Rode it in 6th & 7th grade, kept at a friends house because I wasn't allowed to own one.

My mom and dad were not keen on bikes so I had to wait until I got a real job and moved out on my own. Then I went against  everyone's advice and bought this.

That led to an obsession that was only recently broken. My V85TT was the first non-Ducati street bike I had bought since 1995. I got an RSV-R for a track bike a few years bak too but ended up selling it cuz we just didn't bond...
