Le Mans 3 plastic type
« on: June 23, 2021, 03:58:35 PM »
Hi. Quick question.

I want to do some plastic welding on one of my LM3 side covers. Does anyone know what type of plastic they are?

Thanks,

Damian.

If your lucky and it's not too old, it should have a symbol somewhere on the inside with an identifying number. Also the manufacturer, like Acerbis.

         Hope this helps.

Unfortunately those logos weren't introduced until the late 80s so if the side covers are original parts they're 5-6 years too early.
I would guess that the covers are ABS or a PC/ABS blend but thats all it is - a guess.
Not much help I'm afraid but I'm sure someone with actual knowledge will chime in soon

If it is ABS it will be soluable in acetone. Pick a small spot and see if acetone affects it by softening it,  just a drop will do. Acetone evaporates quickly so little if any damage will occur.

I’ve used ABS plastic pipe cement from the plumbing store to repair motorcycle plastics. It melts the surfaces of the plastic together to create a strong bond.

If they are ABS you can buy thin sheets of ABS (Amazon here) and cut small chips to dissolve in acetone and make a very thin to very thick glue/filler. I have done this to repair a Rifle fairing that had come apart. Good luck!
