I got curious about my first response as to this regulation in NC, so I contacted a friend who has been with DMV enforcement for many years.
In NC there is one exception to putting a tag on a vehicle that’s not issued by the DMV.

An antique vehicle ( vehicle over 30 years old” can use a tag from that era if: The current issued tag  is kept inside the vehicle, along with the registration card.

This is the law in my state, so I cannot speak for any other state.
Hope this helps somewhat.

Interesting... I don't know the law in CA, but that's exactly what I did with my 1955 Cadillac Seven Passenger Imperial Sedan (only different from a factory limo by not having a divider window). I had a black, 1955 dealer plate that I bought at a swap meet. I kept the correct (boring white standard) plate in the trunk (along with the full-size, vertically mounted spare tire). What a boat... it was fun for a while, but that space is my garage is filled with motorcycles now.

Moto marco, if you are going to put a plate on one of those Eldo's you have, you will need to buy on Ebay an original blue Ca. plate for a motorcycle. If the number is not being used, you can register it. Otherwise if you want the black one you have to order from the DMV because the black and yellow plates were prior to 1973 and were not used on the Eldo.

I just won an ebay auction for blue CA motorcycle plate (total $50 delivered). I'm gonna try to register it to my 1989 LeMans.

It's a standard issue number plate, but it has V7 in it. Full number is: 7V7508.  It looks in great condition and it strikes me that somebody here with a vintage V7 might really like it. I don't care about the number, so I'd be open to a trade for a different blue plate, or sell it to somebody here (but only if you have a special V7 to put it on.)

This is the plate on my ‘71 Ambo Police bike.

If they try to pull me over, I’ll just run.  It’s New Jersey…

The plate in question was never an issued plate from the DMV.  The rider would not have a legal reg for it. So if a LEO comes up behind it and enters it into the MDC or a license plate reader hits it, it will come back No Record. Thats enough probable cause for  the traffic stop.

You can register vintage plates that were issued from the state to your vehicle. Totally legal.

I personally don't issue citations to bikes or car drivers for that matter if they have a cycle endorsement. Riders need all the breaks they can get…..unless they are total jack wagons…..

This thread was mildly interesting until I read the term “jack wagon.”  Then it became the best part of my day. I’m still laughing.

Yup, “Exempt”.  Took me a long time to find it.

I do keep the legit historic “Q” plate in the saddle bag…
