Replacing rubber hoses
« on: July 07, 2021, 06:57:32 PM »
So while taking a coffee break, I’m admiring the looks of my 03 Maroon EV, I take a closer look and notice cracks in the rubber hoses near he throttle bodies, yikes both sides look the same, bike has always been kept in garage, and when not in use, tucked in under its cover. So I check out my wife’s 04 Stone and see similar decay. Guess 18 to 20 years is considered serviceable for rubber parts.

Since I’m going to have to do both the California’s I should buy enough to also replace all the lines on the Norge and Breva, perhaps this winters project. Anyone have suggestions on where to get good cheap metric rubber lines in bulk? I haven’t measured the sizes yet I’m hoping the Guzzi shop books have sizes referenced somewhere.

Or would it be better to replace the stuff with higher quality material. 20 years ain’t so bad. Any thoughts?

I started my EV yesterday and the tank return was squirting heavily all over but was dry by tank fitting. Big crack wasn't leaking 2 weeks ago. Hoses say 11mm for tank to pump, same as 7/16. Most the others say 8mm, same as 5/16. Actually says both on hose. Also says SAE30R7. I'm using R9 or R14.
Hydraulic hose repair place in next town should be able to crimp the ends that need it.
Lasted 23yrs, I've had to replace others after 3yrs.

OH YEA, Welcome back David

Replace all rubber hoses was one of the first things I did on a new to me 20 year old Jackal.  I seem to recall several thought it was overkill.  it's not.

Pain in the neck job, good that you don't have to do it very often. From what I read (https://www.thisoldtractor.com/mg_manuals/workshop_manual_california_en_de_ne.pdf), the pressure to the injectors is 3+/-0.2 Bar or 43.5 psi, so make sure the hose you get will handle that pressure as well as the ethanol. Don't think there's any need to get the 300 psi hose as it's much stiffer.

Might as well replace the fuel filter while you're in there and the S-shaped breather hose (PN 28 15 74 50), too.

I get rubber hose from the local farmers supply.its marked
Greenline G611-025 1/4" 50 PSI Fuel Line SAE 30R7
Greenline G611-031 5/16" 50 PSI Fuel Line SAE 30R7
Its quite inexpensive, i usually buy 10 ft at a time
On the low pressure gravity lines I use it without clamps but if I ever use it on fuel injection I will get some decent clamps.

I replaced most of them on my 02 stone. Dont use cheap...  I got good hose rated for the use at the local napa. Again its not cheap, but you really dont need a lot of it. I had the hardest time finding hose for the petcock to pump. I couldnt find the metric size, and the next size US was just too big. I ended up picking up some -8 AN hose with nylon braid, and it fit well. Also dont forget the GOOD clamps! I always use the FI style clamps. Not the normal worm style.

The insidious thing about fuel line degradation is it deteriorates on the inside thanks to ethanol. I’ve seen a few carburetor “issues” where the float bowl will have very small rubber crumbles from the hoses after the fuel filter . Personally I will replace hoses @ about 30k Mi. Or 5 Yrs. touch wood , ok so far.

Yup, hoses are like tires.  They perish with time, even if they're just sitting on a shelf.  Which do you want -- good, or cheap?  Check the prices of hose rated for EFI and E10+.  That's the good stuff, and it's not cheap.  But it beats riding down the highway on a flaming bike.  I've been using Gates.  5/16 is as good as 8mm for the hoses.  You may need to heat the end in boiling water to get it over the spigot barb.

Welcome back David! Looking forward to seeing some of your great photography!

It's been a while since I last did an f.i. Cali, but I remember sourcing that 12 mm (?) hose from a BMW (auto) parts supplier.

Thanks for the good words, guys.  The herd appears to have thinned a little, and it's good to see who of the old crowd remains.  I've spent the - learning how to take hummingbird pictures.  So there will be photography.

Welcome back!

Great photo! I've been more aware of hummingbirds lately since I rescued one from my garage ceiling. They only try to fly upward no matter how many windows and garage doors you open. Never knew. Keep those photos coming.

Nice shot David! We have scads of the little boogers zipping around the house. One actually flew in the house, I was able to catch it and release outside. As soon as I let it go I realized I didn't get a picture  We go through quite a bit of sugar. I'll be in Alaska 1st of Sept for some fishing!

Oh, there was nothing hard about that according to a self claimed photography guru at the time. All you have to do is wave the camera around with a motor drive running..

What a time trying to deal with idiots at auto parts. Just so you know the petcock hose is 7/16 or 11mm. I got PT#CQ24106 Gates hose from Advance Auto. Doesn't have much pressure but good for Ethanol to pump. It fit on like factory and went in the metal wrap from stock one.  The line from pump to fuel filter is about 32", good luck finding anything over a 2' section made of SAE30R14. Time will tell, got 10' on order. Going to try another place also and got a place to crimp on the ends, just like factory but better hose.

To the OP, so far down here in NZ I have been able to avoid petrol with ethanol.  This topic came up at a friends place last night about ethanol and what it does to hoses and glass tanks.   There were no end of problems early on with older cars that didn't have crossflow heads, where the rubber fuel hose cracked and spewe petrol on to the hot exhaust manifold and caught fire.

Ya, I had no luck at all. Coming from the import world [25 years VW/Mazda parts] I called a lot of my old connections, and nothing. Maybe its something that is just no longer used on the cars. Maybe a part of the country/world that has more of the old ones. But the -8AN fit great.

This is the type of thread that’s beneficial to all of us. Hats off to the author 👍
After reading this thread it made me aware that my 02 Stone is approaching 20 years old, therefore probably a good idea to check the condition of my hoses.
Surprisingly mine has the outward appearance of like new rubber. Therefore unless there is a concern for inside deterioration or breakdown, I guess I’m good to go. If there are concerns of unseen likely hose damage, hopefully some of you more informed folks on the subject will chime in.

Perhaps they were already replaced? There's a date code printed on the hose, that should tell you if they're original or not.

If you need the 8mm or 5/16"  hose I'll have plenty enough for 3 or 4 bikes. Mine had big cracks in the tank return line where it bends.
Picked up hose today, Gates #27340 5/16" or 7.9mm SAE 30R14, good for biofuel & E85 alcohol. Nowit's updated to today's standards.

The books don't have squat, part # and one available is $150 and most likely old line by now. My 5/16" or 7.9mm hose was 10ft and used it up on 98EV. in tank pump is way less. $40 of 5/16 SAE30R14 made in 2021. Wait till you buy cheap stuff it's almost double for 30R9 but that's what they mostly sell. Stay cheap and be on side of road. I changed all my hose, even evap hose running all the way under bike without any evap componants.
