2nd bike: 2012 Triumph T100
« on: August 07, 2021, 02:39:19 PM »
I know many of us have multiple bikes and with the market hot for used bikes picked up a 2013 Triumph T100 with 3500 miles, nipples still on the tires and with sport solo seat, fly screen, engine guard, passenger hand rest. Very sharp and comfortable. I know many MG'ers also have Triumphs

Ive had triumphs before, great bikes and reliable. Oddly enough, I have a V85TT.

You can take the snorkle out of the bike and it frees it up a bit, a bit more power and a bit louder than a sewing machine. Sharp bike!

If it doesn't already have a set of TORs (Triumph Off Road mufflers) you might want to shop for a good pair of used ones.  Not too quiet, not too loud, just right!  There's a ton of aftermarket stuff for the first gen 'new' Triumphs (2001 -- 2016.)

Dave 1068 ..... weren't we both on T Rat several years ago when we both had earlier T100s?

Great bikes. Only trouble mine ever gave me was reluctant cold weather starting. Cured by F.I. in the 2009-  forward models.

Hi Bob,

Good memory, I recall you had a BMW bumblebee, W650 and we both had 1200 Sports.

Hope all has been well w/ you. I think those Triumph sites are still active, I may try to find TORs, also, Theres a company out of the UK< Burton, that makes and old school looking seat for the T100;s that looks like it adds 3-4" in height which I may look into

You are right on ..... I did have 2 of these bikes at the same time.  Still have the BMW, just sold the 1200 Sport in 2020 after 70k miles of enjoyable riding.  The W has been gone for several years.  It was a honey!

Good to reconnect!

Agreed Bob,

I forgot how good these bikes are, well made and sharp looking and also easy to work on. Just taking out the snorkel gave it a bit more oomph and more  rumble. I may try to find a Burton Hinckley style seat,

Dave,
I rode this one (Orange and Silver) for nearly 50,000 miles, including a 4400 mile trip out West with my good riding buddy Tom on his similar 790cc Bonnie.  We both owned larger bikes at the time, but decided to take our time, take less Interstate, and take smaller bikes. These were, and are, damned good bikes!

There will always be an England!

Hi Dave, I have an '08 (last year for the carbs in the U.S.) and have put both TORs and a Burton seat on it.  While the Burton looks like it adds that much height, I don't think so, I'd guess 1-1.5" at best.  The seat is more comfortable than a stock seat and looks quite a bit better too.  They are expensive new (Guzzi content!).  The Triumph solo seat (with luggage rack in the passenger position) or their King/Queen seat are more comfortable than stock - FWIW.  The TORs can be had used, watch for a clean undamaged pair on ebay or TRat's classified.  Nice bike...I also have a '16 water cooled Bonneville, but in some ways I like the T100 a little better even though it does not have the power of the '16 nor a number of the features of the newer series of the bike.  Good luck with it, they seem to be a fine bike.  I am pictured with Bob in the photo he posted on my '01 Bonneville - it too was very hard starting cold many times, but reliable.  Tom

Good info thanks, Ive had a quite a few Triumphs over the years, Scramblers, a 790 when fenders were metal and a thruxton. I will say for a small bike, relatively speaking, super smooth ride and easy to ride. My bike has the single seat which I think is now discontinued, comfortable but at 6'2, the stock seat is a bit better as i can slide back. also has a fly screen, bar end mirrors and a crash bar.

I may look into getting the burton seat as I see one on CL near me but I believe the added height means I lose the grab rail.

Big fan, I had a gold and cream `16 T100 I bought new and sold after a year with low miles.  The TORS exhausts were too tame for me, the model for the Scrambler sound much better.  Overall I prefer the Scrambler 270 degree crank and ergos and still have two of them..

Hey gents,

Good posts, Its been a while since I had a modern classic but I recently ran the tank as low as I thought I could to test it and then remembered there was always something a bit off w/ the tanks, light comes on early and perhaps on the pre FI bikes, gas from one side of the tanks couldnt get to the other side.

My results: stopped for gas about 170 miles, thought light came on at 123 then again about 140ish.
I put in 3.3 gallons on a 4.2 gallon bike. If i recall my simple math, 170 div by 3.3  equals 51mpg, the remaining 1.1 gallon perhaps may or may not be usable but if I were to to use the above #s, would I have gotten another 50 miles out of it or would the tank/reserve not kick in?

220 miles would be great but I dont think Id try it. What say my fellow T100'ers?

There is 0.9 gallons remaining with a 3.3 gallon fill-up.  Not sure how the reserve system works on that tank, but I get 45mpg and I'm looking for a gas pump after 135-150 miles.  I won't risk it.

Good to know thanks, I was hoping to gain 2-3'' from the looks of the seat but I guess the further back on the seat, It looks to be higher. Next option is perhaps higher and better quality rear shocks like ikon, hagons or progressives

Great idea! They came with wires attached to the carbs to supposedly heat the carbs but it never made a difference on mine. I might be getting my Bonnie/Dnepr rig back this fall. I gave it to my son, but he is way to big to enjoy it, and he's not a very experienced bike mechanic. The bike now requires a bit of maintenance, so he may throw in the towel and return the bike to Dad. I'll have to either hire a hauler, or make another trip to Columbiana County, Ohio this fall.

Those wires are not for a carb preheater, but to stop the carbs throats from freezing up under the right conditions...not doubt someone will clarify that.  I confirmed that those "heaters" did nothing to help cold starting by taking some temp readings with the ignition on but not starting the bike for various lengths of time - absolutely no change in the temp of the cold carbs.

This is just what I have read, but if the fuel pump is in the tank you will never use the full capacity, not should you try because the fuel keeps the fuel pump from overheating.  So I have read.

I have also read that if you run it dry it can take a while to re-pressurize the system.

Bottom line is I won't push it.  I usually need a break every 100 miles or so anyway.

I recently put an ad on Craigslist, offering my garage, tools, and experience to any beginning motorcyclist, and one young man took me up on it. He showed up with an 03 America, non runner, which he bought for $1500 with 9000 miles.   I've never been close to any new Triumphs, but I was pretty impressed. Sharp looking bike, and very pleasant to ride once sorted.

Good to know thanks, Im surprised a company like Triumph (at that time) couldnt have made a tank where it actually uses its fuel plus reserve w.out issue
