Every time I think about an airhead I remember how badly they handle compared to a good Guzzi.  Flexi frames, weak brakes.  R100RS or LeMans 5, give me the Guzzi.  Mille vs R100R give me the Guzzi.  R90S vs LeMans 3, give me the Guzzi.  I've had many airheads.  I'll take a good Guzzi 90% of the time.

Here she was, after I'd owned the GS for 18 years.  The two of us (GS and me) are making our 2nd solo ride to the Southwest USA, late summer 2009.

I purchased this 1991 BMW on the advice of Gary Lauch, one of the owners of Heritage BMW in Greensburg PA.  I'd asked Gary why,  with all the BMWs he could ride out west, he picked a GS for 2-3 years. His response was "its the best touring bike they make today."  So, when I was transferred to Ann Arbor, I ended up buying this bike from Andy Pelc BMW.  This history means little to the Guzzi community, but any long-time Beemer riders from this part of the country are probably familiar with one or both of these dealerships, though they'll have to turn on the wayback machine to the late 1980s and early 1990s.

I bought this bike after spending nearly 100k miles on 'flying bricks.'  And it was initially such a disappointment.  Low power, flexy frame, too soft suspension.  Don't know what hit me, but one Sunday, after I'd put nearly 1500 miles on the bike, it came together. I'd ridden south to my old Toledo stomping grounds, and was riding along the south side of the Maumee River, from Grand Rapids Ohio toward Perrysburg.  I encountered a herd of "Wild Hogs," all running 40mph in the 55mph zone.  This sucked, so I dropped down a gear or two, and unleashed all 58hp.  Around we went.  And I thought, 'this bike maybe isn't that bad after all.'

Today, Nov 19,2021, the old gal has nearly 164,000 miles on the clock.  She is (at my age) a bit too tall, and will probably have to go on the block.  But all I can say is, I get why thousands of riders like these old airhead GSs.  They're an honest motorcycle that didn't quickly pull me in.  Certainly no instant gratification.  No 'sound like a small block Chevy' that instantly draws one to a Guzzi. A frame that the Germans describe as 'gummikuh' or rubber cow.

However, 31 years later, thanks BMW, for the best overall bike I've owned.

In ‘91 the R100GS wasn’t just the best touring bike BMW made, it was also the best sport bike they made.  Also better and faster down a twisty road than anything Guzzi was making at that time as long as the speeds were below say 80 mph.  I currently own and have about 100K miles on a LeMans and a little more than that on my ‘90 GS.  I’ve led a lot of high zoot bikes across passes in the Alps on the old GS.  It’s a remarkable bike in its ease of maintenance and capability combined.  I’d pay more now for a new R100GS than a new 2021 BMW.

They regularly sell for $10K+.

I had scooped up an R75/6 in 1995 to compliment my not so reliable Ironhead Sportster. Back then their was a BMW dealership in Deptford, NJ. Being a college student I never had the funds to have my BMW properly serviced but could still scrounge enough for parts. One day during these part hunting visits I spotted the oddest BMW I'd have ever seen. This Tourquise Blue and White, knobby wearing, big gas tank thing sitting in the corner. I thought incorrectly at the time that all newer BMWs were mostly K bikes. I asked the counter guy a bunch of annoying questions. Answers  included: Not for sale, customers bike, yes their heavy, eight and a half gallon tank, no they can't go off road, not for you, go away already.

It was November of 1997 and I was living in Philadelphia at the time. It was right around then that I received my first issue of BMW MOA. I scanned the classifieds and whoa... 1991 Red R100GS, 6,000 miles $6,500. I did what every hard working, God fearing American kid did at the time: Hit my parents up for some money. "Once in a lifetime opportunity, they stopped making them in a few years back, gotta have it, I'll pay you back" Anyways- funds in hand I visited the Seller somewhere off of West Chester Pike and rode back with the GS. Smooth and fast was the initial impression, especially compared my prior bikes. A few years later, BMW of St. Louis advertised PD tanks and side panels for a fistful of dollars so I picked that up along the way. Close to 24 years of GS ownership, bike took me through college, my first job in Newark, NJ, my second job in lower Manhattan in WT2, a trip to Alaska, and everything thereafter. Currently 1,300 miles shy of 100k. Good times!

I should put mine out there.  A 1991 Bumblebee.  One owner.  It (she) currently has over 163,000 miles on the odometer.  I've kept it in good shape, but I'm not confident of stops with the bike, as I seem to have either gotten shorter, or less confident holding this tall bike up when stopping.

So, here's a nice 1991 R100GS that has had a lot of maintenance and upkeep performed over the past 30+ years, that I think I may put on CycleTrader or either of the BMW club classifieds.

I'm afraid the mileage will totally scare buyers away, or cause them to really lowball me.  Your guys thoughts ....??

Approaching 79 years old really sucks!  The good  part is ..... I still feel good and still enjoy riding, so I really shouldn't be bitching ......

     Yup 30&40K, is in the silly territory for old beemer DS.

     The only attraction I can see, is the lack of electronic headaches that comes with their new bikes.

     I agree with a comment that Phil made elsewhere, it's indicative of the completely different values and economic realities that some people live in.

     If I was ever going to drop that type of coin on a bike, it would be something that made my heart go pitter patter, those beemers aint it.

Now the time Bob. The mileage will certainly affect value some but that’s a well cared for and great looking bike.
