Rye Whisky
« on: December 17, 2021, 07:22:01 AM »
OK, someone started an Irish Whiskey thread, and someone mentioned rye..........any one tried any specially good rye whisky lately? I have 2 that I think are pretty exceptional: High West Rendezvous, about $70 so not cheap....but really good! And maybe my fave, also not cheap at around $110 a bottle and ONLY available at the distiller, Hillrock Rye finished in Port wine barrels. The distiller is in Ancram NY in case any of the East coast people want an awesome tour. No money spared in building the place, including the floor malting building and peat fires below, for their Single Barrel Malt. Well worth the trip!

I love a good rye.  For cheap I drink Sazarak from New Orleans and when I want the good stuff: Angels Envy rye finished in rum barrels.

I've never been much of a straight rye drinker so I blend Bulleit (MGP) with Mellow Corn (Heaven Hill).  3:1 Mellow Corn gives you a 60% corn, 31% rye low cost drinker that holds up well to ice.  And there's no sense in wasting good hooch with ice!

I'd rather drink my concoction then any of the 51% rye's out there, but Old Forester is a good step up to a straight rye.  I think it's 65% or so.

+1 on Angels Envy Finished Rye.  It’s a little sweet but very smooth.  My holy grail is Willett 10 year.  I had it at the bar at the Campbell House in Lexington KY side by side with a glass of Weller 12 bourbon.  Best $90.00 I ever spent. Whistle pig is good but getting too pricy.  High West is a love it or hate it - very sweet. Bulleit is the restaurant go-to.

The best bang for buck hands down has to be Knob creek straight rye 100 proof small batch.
having lamented the loss of my beloved "green label 100" wild turkey, this has been by far the best replacement yet!
the rye market is now booming again:basil hayden makes several excellent selections, tin cup is okay, western son ok,  bullit is a bit overpriced, don't waste your time with whistlepig....OVER overpriced!
I have yet to try rabbit hole rye...next on my to done list. as a side note I have become fond of monkey shoulder scotch, put it on your list! for the bourbon drinkers out there here is my well kept secret: old crow! bottom shelf for sure, but as good and half the price of jack/jim!

We've enjoyed a few bottles of Standard Proof (SP) from a distillery in FL. They deliver mail order and do an excellent job on that.

Bullet is excellent too. We love a Manhattan once in a while.

What’s this BS with all the NON- :boozing:KY suggestions???     Kidding.  A little.
When not sipping scotch, rye is still my preferable whiskey over bourbon even.  I like its spicy aspect whereas I often find standard bourbon a little too sweet for me.
I would personally say Willett Family Rye is my absolute favorite.  In close proximity behind is Sazerac Rye - someone above mentioned it as their “cheap” choice but uh, it ain’t cheap nowhere around here  and going for about $60 or more a bottle these days.  Rye whiskies that are more in tune (and still very good) with my basic public servant salary are Michter’s Rye and Old Overholt Rye.  If neither of these latter are available, Woodford Reserve Rye is plenty acceptable along with even Dickel if you must.

Another vote for Bulliett and Michters. Saw a show the other day called Hillbilly, a documentary about the history of Kentucky. Much focus on the history of Kentucky bourbon. They stated that the first distillers in Kentucky came from PA, where they made rye whisky. When they settled in Kentucky they discovered that corn grew well in KY, and that corn liquor was as good as rye, albeit with a different flavor.

High West Rendezvous Rye... very tasty, and no hangover as my brother and I discovered despite our best efforts.

Pricey. They make a double rye for about half the price but it's not as good by a long shot. But I'll drop the coin for the Rendevous Rye.

https://www.seriouseats.com/guide-to-rye-whiskey-cocktail-101-basics-what-is-rye-how-is-it-made-brands

"In Lawrenceburg, Indiana (in the southeast corner of the state, near its borders with Ohio and Kentucky), sits a massive distillery, formerly owned by Seagrams. Until recently, the facility was known as Lawrenceburg Distillers Indiana, or LDI, and you'll find that some whiskey writers still refer to it as such.

The previous owners sold the plant recently, however, and it's now known as MGP Ingredients. MGP stands for Midwest Grain Products, and that gives you an indication of what the company does; it makes food, alcohol (both for beverages and for fuels), and bioplastics. Among its outputs are massive quantities of neutral grain spirits that are used in both vodkas and gins.

MGP/LDI also makes whiskey. Two main products come from its whiskey plant, and there's a strong chance you've tasted them, without realizing it. The first is a high-rye bourbon. This term refers to a bourbon with a large amount of rye grain in the mash bill. From the MGP plant in Indiana, that means the bourbon is 60% corn, 36% rye, and 4% malted barley.

The other product is what I'll be talking about here: rye whiskey. The MGP product is 95% rye and 5% malted barley.

As you might know, there are several rye whiskey products on the market right now that contain 95% rye. All of them are made at MGP/LDI; here's a list:"
Templeton, Redemption, Bulleit, Willett, High West, and possibly George Dickel.

I don't think MGP distills for Willitt anymore.  My bottle of family estate rye declares it to be made in KY by them.
My understanding was MGP supplied Willittt when they returned but they have had time for their own distillate to mature and they do not source any longer.

Does that imply they all taste the same or do some have other ingredients added or aged in different types of barrels??

According to the Willitt website the Estate Rye was the first whiskey to come off their pot still in 2015.  I'll take that to mean it's no longer sourced from that date forward.  Which is in conflict with the rye link posted above.

All MGP rye tastes the same... or it doesn't!

http://whiskeyenthusiasts.com/articles/all-mgp-ryes-taste-the-same-no-they-dont-yes-they-do/

For MGP it's mostly age and proof.  Try the Bulleit against the Redemption Barrel Strength 7 and see which one you like.  Then go for an older aged bottle in the same proof.  Older rye gets expensive quick, however.
