service intervals
« on: February 01, 2022, 09:32:31 AM »
I hate to admit it, but I have only ridden my 2007 Norge about 2500 miles since a major service in June 2020. I'm all for proper maintenance, but wondering how harmful it could be to ride it another 2500 before changing oil/filter and rear drive. Even though we are approaching 2 years, I suspect the oils are just fine, having sat in a heated garage. Any thoughts?

I personally wouldn't sweat the rear drive oil, but how were those 2500 miles ridden. Short trips, I'd change the oil, long hiway miles I'd let it go. My $.02.

Brake fluid and hydraulic clutch fluid degrade with time.  Hamlin makes a good buck rebuilding those two items that get neglected.

JMO, if you do not ride until it's warmer (depends where you live) I would wait until you are going to ride again.

Engine oil is a lot less expensive than an engine, and these are easy bikes to service.  I would definitely do the engine oil at least annually, and if you ride very little and not at all over the winter, a spring time oil change will discard accumulated moisture from sitting over the winter.

I just did all the fluids in my 1200 Sport that sat for about a decade (waiting on a new bleeder to do brake/clutch fluids though).  The engine oil and transmission oil still looked brand new, but the final drive oil that came out was a little on the milky side.

Ride it to the 5000mile mark then change it.
Do the brake fluid while you are at it,  that us probably the more important fluid.

At the very least, a visual inspection of the fluids would be good to do...pull the dipstick, open up the brake and clutch reservoirs.  If the fluid is dark, dirty, murky, makes sense to change them.

A short ride around the neighborhood to test brakes first before doing a long ride might be advisable just to ensure you have pressure in the system and the brakes are actually working!

On my ‘07 Norge, I do the engine/gearbox/ bevels every 10,000 km.
A major service including ALL fluids every 20,000 km.
You’ll notice the clutch fluid is particularly grubby upon removal. I cannot say why, but the only thing it CAN be, is heating of the fluid in the slave cylinder and/or contamination from degrading seals in the system.

Just ride it ‘till it gets hot, dump it, then ride it...Lots. :bike-037:

Here’s the thing about that...
I want to have 198,500 km on it when (and if) I put it in the box for Mandello. It currently has 197,000 and I’m heading off on a trip tomorrow on the trail bike or the good one.
Thing is, you can bet your left one that the trip will be within a bee’s dick of 2,000 k, so that’ll mean I can’t hardly ride the Norge after I get home....(First world problem)

The reason I want the k’s to be as stated post trip, is that I know how far it is from London to Mandello and I want it to turn over 200,000 at the factory gates.
Is that asking too much...?

Well maybe to give yourself just a bit of margin, get to Mandello with a 100km to spare and ride around the lake once but video tape it!!

You will be feted with the best gelato in town at the red gate!  Even Carlo the marble Statue will wink at you as you ride on by and click 200,000km!
