This is a great thread. Lots of love shown for these wonderful companions.

February seventh marks the birthday of our black lab, Maverick. He is eight years old and I think that makes him about 54, still younger than I. Having a dog added to our family of six was not something I wanted. I didn't want to have to feed and clean and train and potty train and vacation with a pet. I just did not want the added responsibility.

I became the victim of a propaganda scheme. Little post-it notes were strategically placed to rile my emotions.

On my closet door, in my lunch bag, on my steering wheel. Promises of we will take care of him, we will feed him, we will clean up after him. After what seemed like months of harassment they had finally wore me down! He is a good dog and I'm glad to have him. That post it note still hangs in my closet, a constant reminder of my youngest daughter.

Scout, the wonder dog. She helps me sail the dinghy:

She helps me test the new boats I like to build:

She likes to swim with my wife:

She likes to just hang out:

And she helps in the vineyard:

I had a Scout. She was a fox red lab. Best dog I ever had. She went unnamed for a while until we were snowbound in Maine and To Kill a Mockingbird came on the TV. Her name is retired.

Our 12year old rescue  Jessie. Had a rough start when left on a chain to starve or freeze to death in Yonkers N.Y. Adopted her when she was a year and a half from a foster home. Most loyal and protective dog ever and a real sweetheart to have around.

we were snowbound in Maine and To Kill a Mockingbird came on the TV. Her name is retired.

I had an unnamed pup and was in Nome, Alaska for a meeting when I walked into the facility where the meeting was to be held-- it closely resembled the court room scene in To Kill a Mockingbird (with the audience gallery up above the meeting down below). I instantly knew then that the pup would be named Scout. Best dog ever (we took her to the beach again yesterday). She turns 11 next month and we're hoping for many more years with her but thankful for every day we have with her now.

Nice! I like the tug in the second picture. Commercial fishing boat?

The boats in the background are all commercial fishing boats. The little home-built runabout is a Phil Bolger design, "Skimmer", meant to be a "poor man's Boston Whaler" (plans here: https://www.instantboats.com/product/skimmer-8-0-x-4-0/). I can build one of these in about 2 days. Put a 10hp outboard on them and they FLY! Built this one for goofing off with my wife's niece and nephew when they visit and we run out to islands in Narragansett Bay.

So...it's more of a "personal" fishing boat?

This is Rudy, a Vizsla and our last "new" dog. He's going on 15 now and is starting to get a little long in the tooth. Sorta like me. He is loved.

The pond I kayak in has a Vizsla at the north end. He is totally obsessed with being in the water searching for fish.
Nothing distracts him. Not my dog, treats, my Barred Owl calls, nothing. I tell his mom she has the perfect home for him.
