Noob question - SAE cord?

I found this SAE? connector on the right side of my 2021 V7 stone:





Am I correct in assuming that I could use it to power other electronics such as a USB charger (e.g. https://www.amazon.com/YonHan-Voltmeter-Motorcycle-Disconnect-Waterproof/dp/B072JM3NWG/ref=sr_1_6?crid=6LOB12FHHNR)? I didn't see a description in the manual.

More than likely - probably for battery charging but you can plug into it as you suggested

First measure voltage across it both with and without ignition on….report back.

That's a battery tender plug. Check for voltage. They make a connector that converts it to a USB port. Pretty handy.

When I bought my V85 at Cadre they had installed a SAE plug to the battery as part of their prep. I have a cigarette lighter plug adapter for it if I decide to get heated gear, as well as for a battery tender when she is parked in the garage.

These usually have a low amperage fuse in them nearer to the battery and are of small gauge wire, be careful what you ask of them. They are also made in heavier gauge wire with more capacity and heavier fusing. I use a heavier one to run my compressor for repairing flats and other heavier tasks as well as charging the battery.

My new 2017 V7III Special came with one fitted at the factory I think.
Yes you can use it however you like but the fuse will blow if you try and pull too much current.

Correct me if I'm wrong. I think a Battery Tender cable for charging the battery is wired backwards from an SAE accessory plug for your phone charger, gps, ect..

Plus is plus - negative is negative.   The exposed plug is the ground - negative and it needs to be all the same for charging or any other use……

You can also use this to jump a bike with a flat battery, you need a pair of wires about 3 feet long with no crossover. Both bikes need at least a 20 Amp fuse. A riding buddy and I carried a set on a 2 week trip to Alaska. We didn't need them there but came in handy one day when he left his lights on while having lunch.

Yep. Handy for checking your voltage. And see how the old alternator is working

the only anomaly is if it is not installed correctly and hooked up to the battery incorrectly - see previous posts...

It’s about which pin on the plug is unshrouded. You don’t want the bare positive hanging out of the battery side nor do you want the bare positive exposed from the charger but it has to be that way. Use the charger side connection as a battery side connection and that is the anomaly I speak of. Tom is correct.

I guess what I was getting at was that when you run an extension cable from that plug to power whatever, make sure that positive goes to positive. I'm pretty sure it wont be a problem, only takes a minute to check it.

The problem comes when I grab a connector out of a box of connectors and it’s the wrong one. Wire color is reversed, iirc. It’s just another alligator to bite you in the butt, a small one to be aware of , check polarity as Mark and Tom advised.
