Pure gas
« on: February 18, 2022, 10:16:52 AM »
I've been going well out of my normal way to fill the bikes w/"93" ethanol-free gas. The price has gone beyond ridiculous. Checking "pure gas (dot)com " I see several more convenient locations selling E-free "90". Opinions wanted: Will my babies be happy running the "90"?  Bikes are '74 Eldo older restoration iron liner 850, '03 V11 Sport naked (for sale), and a '17 V7III Special.
Thanks,
ronkom

I've been running real gas 90 for years cause that's what it is here. My EV runs about the same as 93 E gas. I been using a conditioner it it too to clean up motor at 65Kmi. I got that for the Jeep after seeing the goo in injector rail when I changed a bad injector(stuck open). I changed all of them & wanted to get the crap out.
I don't have to go out of my way to get it. Use it in mower & all but Jeep.
Try both grades you decide.

I run both types of gasoline in my 83 Honda and 02 Stone and to be perfectly honest I can’t tell any difference between tanks in any way.
I’ve done this practice for several years.
On a road trip I seldom use no ethanol due to being hard to find and not advised from the signs.

Wal-Mart / Murphy Oil always has ethanol-free 91-Octane at "reasonable" prices.

It's what I've been running (mostly) for the past few years in the things that require premium.

Otherwise, it's Shell or Conoco 93 at their highest in town prices.

Poor fuel economy.  I've tried it in a newish GM truck designated as E85 compatible.

E85 is just not worth it.

I think if you can't afford gas for your motorcycles it might be time to find another hobby.   :undecided:

Heaven forbid if you need tires.

No.  But I use plain 87 in all my cars, even my Corvette that specifies 91 (but can accept 87 which BTW is true for all cars sold here).

Guess what?  My Corvette can't tell the difference.  Nothing, nada, runs the same.  Do I do it because I'm cheap?  Perhaps, but I don't like to be foolish either.

The question is about e85 not 87,I’m cheap and drive old cars but don’t want to use it if it is harmful.

I use Ethanol free when I can find, no matter the cost.  I have several stations close to where I live, so that isn't an issue finding it local.  when traveling that can become an issue, so I use pure gas app when away from home.
Price doesn't factor in for me.  Diesel is a lot more expensive and I just dropped over a hundred to fill the truck up today.
I run pure gas in my bike, outboards, lawnmower and weed eater.

I use E0 for the mower, motorcycles, and anything else that has a plastic fuel tank or doesn't get driven at least every 2-3 days.

Anything that gets driven regularly gets E10.

As far as octane, I've found that 87 octane can be used in almost any road-going vehicle with an ECM (even those that 'require' 93), as long as the driver doesn't mat the accelerator pedal.  I occasionally used 87 octane in my supercharged T-bird.

I would strongly advise against using E85 in any vehicle not specifically designed to use it.

Most modern cars will adapt to the fuel used. It wont feel much or any different, but will make less HP because of the tuning changes the systems make.

I ran E85 in my Grand Caravan once. MPG was much worse as could be expected but the engine management did perk up the power a noticeable amount. I know a few that built their hot cars to burn it. Allows them to run higher compression, and more aggressive timing in the engine, and is much more common and cheaper then race fuel.

I know I keep saying this, but I've been running E10 in everything (it's mandated at the pump) in chainsaws, garden tractors, everything. Never a problem even after a year of sitting.

I tried "ethanol free", I thought it was a complete waste of money.

Same here. My XT500 Yamaha actually ran worse on "pure gas".

The local Circle K offers ethanol free option at all their dispensers.  The only thing I noticed with ethanol free in the '03 Lemans is that the bubbling in the black stripe (decal?) running down the center of the fuel tank disappeared after a few weeks and a tank full.  I'm not really sure my fuel economy changed.  And, I don't know if I will commit to only the E free stuff in this bike since I run 87/89 in the rest of my junk without issue and it's cheaper.

I thought they initially blended a miniscule amount of ethanol to prevent fuel line freeze up in winter and to help the engine digest moisture in the fuel system but these days blending in 10-15% is just like adding cheap filler that brings more moisture into the engine but what do I know, I'm not an engineer.

I wouldn't think when traveling that it would matter.  More than likely, you'll burn through the gas tank in less than a day's drive.

The worst thing is dirty gas that might clog a fuel filter.  Going to gas stations with lots of traffic would suggest that the gas is clean and replaced frequently.

I thought about the "power" differences of 87 vs 91 for my Corvette.  I honestly can't feel any difference.  I blindly paid for the expensive stuff until I saw that TV show "Engine Masters".  They put the Chevy LS3 engine on a dyno and ran both fuels and the power output was identical.  And back to my point above, 87 is bound to be the cleaner fuel since it's pumped as a greater volume.  So far as ethanol, given a choice I avoid it but not to the point of going to another station.

I go to an old Pure gas station where they clean your windows & fuel your vehicle. Old 60's cars in the bays and usually old guys sitting around talking. They always ask me why I'm riding the bike I'm on and how the others are doing. I can get real gas closer but you got to go for a ride.
I was on a ride in N GA running out of gas & put in 87 non-ethanol, bike ran like dogpoo, next town got 93 ethanol and ran it through. Swapped fuel filter last year and the EV ran way better, might have to change it more often than 50Kmi.

Oh ya, its really not going to be enough to really feel in normal driving. A lot comes down to how the engine is tuned to run. A modern engine will adjust timing, and fuel management if it senses any detonation.  If your not riding that edge its not going to effect anything. And ya, for a daily I would take fresh E10 over old E free. I do use E free on my bike mostly because sadly it does sit a lot. In my use it does last a lot longer while sitting, and I use it in my gas powered equipment, and it allows me to forgo draining everything in the off season. When I am on trips I use whatever. Also early in the season I dont worry about it because I know it wont sit that long.

The Engine Masters TV showed that beyond normal driving, actually run on the dyno, that Octane made no difference on the Chevy LS-3 engine.

I don't use E Free either, virtually unavailable in California. I once used avgas in my racing outboard because it was required for a championship race. I had to adjust the mixture a bit, I think I had to go a tickle richer. It seemed like I was a little bit slower.

My 98 V11EV is perfectly happy running 87 octane ethanol free which is available around here. When I am on the road I usually can find 91 non gasohol which runs the same as the 87.
