V7 Sport gearbox removal

Is it possible to remove the gearbox from a V7 Sport (1972) without removing the whole engine/gearbox as a unit?

I need to replace the rear engine crankshaft seal. I seldom have somebody to give me a hand (I.E. lift the frame off the engine/gearbox unit) and don't have suitable lifting gear to do this. looking at it, I am thinking if I remove enough stuff (rear wheel, rear fork, exhaust etc.) and support the rear end of the bike I might be able to shuffle the gearbox backwards then out the side of the frame.

Has anybody done this already?

No... Complete engine and gearbox must come out of the frame.

That depends on what your definition of removal is. You can “crab the frame” which involves the removal of the rear half and lower frame rails. It’s an all day job…

It's not always the rear main seal that leaks, a drip could also be from the cam plug or the breather hose, if cracked that can drip oil into the bell housing and out the bottom.

  After viewing those pictures I'm sticking with the total frame off , no need for benches and chains from the rafters !  Peter

If you have a work table, lift or the floor, all you need is a flat jack, trans jack or bottle jack and boards.

No... Complete engine and gearbox must come out of the frame.

It’s easier to leave the engine, top frame and front end in place and crab it.  Make sure the front end is secured to the table since you will need to muscle the gearbox from the clutch hub and vice versa. Its an interesting and fun procedure and gives you a chance to clean and check swingarm bearings, unjoint and carrier bearing, wheel bearings etc.

Thank you everybody for your help, information and advice. It looks like I wasn't to far off the mark with my initial thoughts and will proceed with some sort of "crab" maneuver to remove the gearbox.
