Sport 1100i - The Accidental Restomod

One of the first things I’m going to tackle is the leaky rear drive…

Time to order some parts from Harper’s Moto Guzzi.

By this point, I was thinking that the “parts bike” might be too nice to dismantle.  So I started looking for more parts…

[RossB]

By this point, I was fortunate enough to have made a friend of a fellow Guzzi enthusiast in Germany.  He was hunting for parts on his side of the ocean and found me a full set of bodywork.  Not only did he buy them on my behalf for a significant amount of money, but then he packed them up and used a friend in the import/export business to get them to me in the most cost effective method possible.  This guy’s a friend for life at this point.  This minor disaster is already paying dividends.

Since the day of the mishap, I was absolutely sure that I needed a new gas tank.  At this point, I had spent about $5500 in my search for a suitable replacement tank; collecting up an entire spare bike and a full set of bodywork in the process.  That seems like the exact right time for my buddy, Dave, a professional paint and body guy, to tell me “I’m pretty sure that I can fix the original tank”. Doh!

He used the stud gun and pulled out both the dents; commenting that the Guzzi tank is made from surprisingly heavy steel.  The original tank will come out as good as new.

Lots of balls in the air and parts in transit at this point.  I spent a couple hours replacing the leaky seal in the rear drive.

I decided to do a little driveshaft maintenance while I had the rear drive out.  I cleaned everything really well and greased the rear u-joint.  The front u-joint, however, did not have a grease fitting installed.  I bought a selection of 6mm fittings and ended up using a 45 degree angled fitting so that I could actually get the grease gun in there.  I tried a straight fitting initially, but none of my grease guns had a small enough tip to get in there.

Since it seeemed unlikely that the freshly painted tank would match the 25 year old factory paint, Dave will be painting all of the bodywork.  I haven’t been able to identify the original paint code, so I may be going with a non-standard hue.  In the meantime, a friend with a sign shop has recreated all of the decals from photos and dimensions that I provided.  I’m still debating between silver or gold decals at the moment.  If anyone needs a set, he’s going to save the template so he can print more sets in the future.  I’d guess it will be about $40 for a set of 6 decals. (Nose, Tank Left, Tank Right, Tail Center, Tail Right, and Tail Left)

I forgot to mention that my European delivery included the much more desirable non-US headlight!  I’ve always much preferred this design and I was lucky enough to get the bulb as well.  Unfortunately, I’m still on the hunt for the fairing frame that goes with it.  HMU if you’ve got one that you’re willing to part with.  I’m having Dave paint both versions of the front fairing at the same time so that I can swap them out if I ever find the frame I need.

Oh..
I didn’t know you were on it at the time...

You might try.

For color matching paint. If your paint is not listed send them a message. Worked for me!

They do show the red.

Pick the red body panel you like and have it scanned for a match. Forget about finding the correct paint code. Been there, done that, failed.

next time this happens, post here first. I have a almost new yellow tank and a couple of spare Daytona RS fairings.

I feel your pain but never managed to knock over that many bikes at once...I have resisted lining up my bikes for a photo so far.   Well written and enjoyable!I bet the KTM suffered the least damage.
