Cam chain tensioner replacement needed?
« on: March 08, 2022, 04:57:22 AM »
Hello Folks, I have been going through, and sorting all the little things that need to be done on my newly accquired 98 EV, like changing relays, lubing splines, and cush drive, etc etc. I am wondering if the 98 EV has a flimsy type of timing chain tensioner that should be replaced with a valtek, or "bow" type of tensioner, or does this year bike come with a decent oem tensioner?
The bike has around 30K miles.
Thanks
Rick Duarte

I have a 99 EV and didn't change mine until I was over 150,000 miles. I would say unless you are already into the front cover,  have one available, and just looking for something to do I wouldn't bother.  Now if it's worn out,  yeah go for it!

The tensioner in a 1998 is better than the rubber block of old.

Don't believe all the BS here about it. I put the so called flimsey one in my Cal 2 100Kmi ago, still no slop. My EV has no slop @65K mi
I don't believe BS on this forum, "you have to do this, you have to do that". "why, you can't do that" all BS

PS: There are thousands of motors fine with Guzzi's adjuster. I find the bow type to be too much pressure.

Thank you , Tim, Foto, and Steve. You guys have convinced me to leave it alone. I thought it was "ticking" and making noise, but it looks like the noise was caused by exhaust valves having a bit too much clearance. After a good valve adjustment, it has quieted down.

I did (and still do), wonder about that when I did mine

You would have to measure chain stretch, both for a certain amount of mi. .from a new chain.

I did.
I compared the old one with the replacement.
Can’t recall the amount.

Not a nice outcome from an aftermarket tensioner failure.

If the Valtec are 'applying too much pressure' , then that must be what's wanted , mine went in almost 2 decades ago
and heaven knows how many miles and it's still quiet and operating fine , the original , now that bordered on useless !

What Phil’s saying is not that the tensioner is moving too far, it’s that the force applied is too great.
