For me motorcycles provide experiences.  Sometimes I want to experience a different style of riding.

I am slowing down on changing bikes and accumulating miles. I used to add a bike a year when I was averaging 25,000 miles a year, and keeping bikes on average 3 years or 30,000 miles.

I think that it's a phase for many long time bike enthusiasts. I bought and sold over thirty bikes when I was real nuts about bikes. But that was decades ago. The three I have now are keepers. The Triumph is my first Triumph, purchased in 1974, and has survived all the purges. My Cal came in 2001. The Monster two years ago.

Why?
I enjoy the hunt for a bargain. I enjoy seeing the beauty in something that has been neglected that others cannot see. I enjoy bringing those left out to pasture back to their prime one last time. It's my artistic expression - rebuilding bikes.
And at the end of it, I get to ride a different bike for a while and sell it, sometimes losing a few hundred dollars, sometimes making a few hundred, but mostly breaking even (except for my time... which is enjoyable).

Well I have the sickness and fell well and truly down the rabbit hole years ago, an embarrassing number of bikes TBH have passed through my hands but this does not happen in any other aspect of my life. It’s weird. Never had buyers remorse but I’ve had sellers remorse a number of times and nowadays I try to focus on that. If I sell my current bike will I feel the same sickening stomach pull of oh why did I do that, again  :violent1:

There are more than a few I wish I still had, but have not bought the exact same model bike twice.  Too many to try.  3 of my 4 bikes have the ability to be transformed which helps me from growing bored with them.

The Harley Road Glide can go from a stripped down bagger to a full dresser touring bike.

The Moto Guzzi V7III has been transformed into a cafe, but I can also transform it into a light tourer.

I am considering getting dual sport wheels for the KLX300SM to expand where I can ride it when needed.  I also have soft luggage to do some light touring on it.

This keeps my wandering eye a little more focused these days.

Most of the posts here seem to explain my own interest in different motorcycles as well, below from usedtobefast in particular. A couple years back a friend and I discussed riding our old bikes across country, say on Rt 50, me on my Airhead he on his Nighthawk 700 but we just never got around to it. Now his Nighthawk is sold and my Airhead has an oil leak I need to sort. I'm still considering doing the ride, only by myself, maybe on the CB1100 which seems to  bring back memories from 1973 and my CB750.

.....For me, I've found the mechanical bits of the "new to me" bike are as interesting as the ride.  Meaning, I've already ridden all over the roads where I live (like maybe a 500 mile distance from home).   So to take a bike I've owned for ~10 years and ride the same roads again, still kind of fun ... but picking up a new to me bike and seeing how it works, see what I could tweak a bit, how this different bike reacts, etc, makes the rides more interesting to me.

And every once in a while it fun to go back to an older bike ... a friend has suggested we both get Honda 500 Silverwings (not the Silverwing scooters), sort them out a bit, and go on a ~10 day trip on them.  Sounds like fun.

There’s just nothing new out there that has my interest and it’s been that way for quite some time now.
The new Lowrider ST is interesting but I’m not willing to invest 22k at this point and time.
I guess I’ll just be satisfied with my ole 83 CB1000C and my 02 orange Stone. I would like to find a set of standard windshield brackets for the Stone so I could replace the Barn door with a standard  police tombstone type.

Hey Dan, as far as the windshield brackets, you may want to check with Mark Etheridge at Moto Guzzi classics. They have been stripping a down a few Calis, and have a bunch of windshields, brackets, and a bunch of EV parts, etc. that they are selling off. He may just have what you need.

As a friend of mine put it, the formula for the ideal number of bikes is n+1, where n=the number of motorcycles currently owned. Math doesn’t lie.

Kind of like dating to find the right one.  Just put a deposit on a 21 V85. Got a very good offer for trade in of the Bobber Sport. Hoping the V85 is "the one"???
