Thanks for posting that. No hydraulic power steering, no hydraulic winches or capstans. No fat guys in the crew, either. People were made of tougher stuff, then.

That's Irving Johnson--- my riding buddy Steve grew up in Mystic and one day when he was about 10, he met Johnson at the Seaport and Johnson told him a bit about the ship. (Steve is 80 now and rides a 2014 V7 Racer)

I grew up in Mystic. I've read a lot of seafaring stories but have never seen a film like this one. Incredible, when ships were wooden and men were steel. Amazing what they went through. My buddy and I used to roam around the Mystic Seaport during weekdays before it became what it is today. Mrs Stackpole was my Cub Scout den mother. She was the wife of the Seaport "Director", I don’t remember his actual title. He was very instrumental in making the Seaport what it is today including the restoration of the whaling ship Morgan.

a few things of note: the peking was NOT a wooden ship! specificaly built for the nitrate trade in 1911 all steel hull. the ship still exists as a museum in germany. what concerns me most is the mention of two men (mentioned by CPT> johnson) who went OB. and never mentioned again! not just tough sailors but cruel times! great historical film.
its not the end of the world...but you can see it from here!

Love Mystic, and been there many times. Just such a great place to spend the hours.

Ive read a lot on the subject, and it really was a different time. Hearing that so few men knew how to swim on those boats suprised me, but really if your in a gale, going around the horn, and you fall off..  Its not like they are slamming on the brakes, spinning around and picking you up. One of my favorite books of all time is "Two years before the mast" and if you havent read it before its something thats worth the time finding. Gives a good account of life on these boats in that age.

My seagoing time in the 50's was spent aboard Liberty ships, welded steel hulls and 8000 to 9000 tons. Slow and top heavy. On occasion I'd have to perform maintenance or repair on radar antennas while underway. Some trepidation even while wearing a safety harness. I can't imagine what these men felt when working aloft in those conditions.  Each day there was an announcement at noon giving the distance made good since noon of the previous day; usually 250 to 300 miles. One day it was MINUS 25 miles. After going through some heavy weather episodes I promised myself that I would never again go to an amusement park and pay to have my body thrown around! A promise kept to this day.
