Just bought 2008 Norge -Questions for the Experts
« on: April 12, 2022, 01:30:08 PM »
Previous owner is a true gentleman and told me to check out Wild Guzzi, so here I am.  Bike has 30K mi, and it needs some love, so I am looking for your advice on how to address several issues. You probably hear this all the time, but I'm on a budget.  I'm not gonna make this a show bike, so functionality is my priority.
  • Windshield is hazy.  I've located a stock windshield off of a 2016 Norge.  Will it fit?
  • Seems to have leaked brake fluid onto the front rim.  Clear coat is peeling up like plastic.  I think I need to rebuild the caliper. - Any recommendations on where to source and best brands for caliper rebuild kits?
  • It's missing both left and right front turn signal assemblies.  Anybody have any they want to sell?  Are there any other models that use the same assemblies?
  • I've been perusing the forum and reading about gas tanks warped by Ethanol gasoline.  How can I tell if my tank is damaged?

Any help is appreciated.

Fleabay has some seal kits that I think fit those. I think they are listed as Ducati parts. You need to find out what size the pistons are, maybe someone here can tell you.

Good luck,

I wonder why those front turn signals are missing, has this bike gone down at some point? The only reason I ask is because it’s not easy to remove those parts. In terms of finding those signals, I’d look at Pinwall Cycle Parts for those items. They part out motorcycle parts, located in Ohio if I’m not mistaken.

I’d look to MG Cycle for this brake parts and if the tank is swollen see if the rear bolt to the tank(remove seat) is still in place and if so, remove it and see if it easily installs again. If that is OK, and no other signs it probably is OK.

To see if your tank has elongated, take the seat off, then try removing the single bolt that holds the back of the tank down. If after removing the bolt, the bolt hole in the tank's flange isn't aligned with the hole in the frame, then it's elongated. It can get to the point where you have to struggle to install the tank, or have to mill the hole in the tank flange longer. Happened to me with my 08'.

I have a 2009 and a 2013 Norge.  The windshield mounts are different.

If yours is an ‘08 you will in all likelihood have missed the batch that had the suspect oil pump. I have a red ‘07 and they were the ones to be mindful of. You can gather the information as to what VIN no’s the suspect ones were and compare it to yours.
Just so you don’t run off and throw yourself off a cliff, mine has done 200,000 and I have had the pump out recently for a look and it’s fine.
Things to do...
Make sure the startus interruptus mod has been done, there is a lot of info here about it. Very easy to do.
Pull the rear bevelbox off and check the security of the pinion nut.
Obtain and install Beetle’s map if not already fitted, accept no imitations.
Replace ALL fluids. These things are hard on clutch fluid.
Grease the rear drive splines while you have the bevelbox off.
Grease the pins that the rear caliper slides on.
Check the integrity of the battery earth (ground) lead at BOTH ends.

Do an absolute thorough service. Grease every pivot that you can find.

I have bumped an old thread on the subject of maintenance for these.
It’s called “Norge 200,000 k service schedule...” for your perusal.

Thanks everyone for the detailed responses and your willingness to help a new Guzzi owner.  I've already followed up on a couple of the sites that have been suggested and I have not found the parts that I'm looking for... so that search continues.

I will spend the next several weeks following up on the detailed instructions provided here.

Feel free to keep the recommendations coming.  I'll post updates as I get things done.

All the best from Texas!

Give AF1 Racing a call, they have one of the turn signals for $14.20 and they can probably source whatever else you might need.
